It triggers natural growth of enamel crystals — just as happens during a child's tooth development. As a result of laboratory studies, a hard enamel layer 2.8 micrometers thick was formed in just 48 hours. And although the artificial enamel turned out to be hundreds of times thinner than natural enamel, scientists still consider this a success. The researchers hope to increase the enamel thickness through repeated applications of the liquid.
