Why treat this

How a misaligned bite affects you

Crooked teeth are the most visible consequence, but not the only one. The rest appear later and are usually not linked by patients to their bite.

Headaches and jaw joint clicking

When teeth don't meet evenly, the temporomandibular joint works under strain. This causes clicking while eating, pain near the ear, and jaw fatigue in the morning.

Cavities where the brush can't reach

Crowded teeth can't be fully cleaned even with good hygiene. Plaque remains in contact areas, mineralizes, and turns into tartar.

Wear and sensitivity

When the bite is misaligned, some teeth take on the load meant for others. Their enamel wears down faster, and sensitivity to cold and sweets develops.

Gum and soft tissue trauma

With a deep bite, the lower incisors press into the palate; with a crossbite, the cheek gets caught between the teeth. Constant trauma leads to inflammation.

Systems

Ways to correct your bite

The choice depends not on preference, but on how difficult it is to move your teeth in your case. Some cases can't be solved with clear aligners — the doctor will tell you after the treatment plan.

Metal braces with archwire
The classic

Metal braces

The most durable and most affordable. They handle any case, including complex tooth rotations.

Tooth-colored ceramic braces
Discreet

Ceramic braces

The color is matched to the enamel, so they're almost invisible from a distance. They work a little slower than metal braces.

Clear sapphire braces
Clear

Sapphire braces

Made from a grown crystal, fully transparent and does not darken from coffee or turmeric.

Plastic brackets on archwire
Budget-friendly

Plastic braces

Cheaper than ceramic but softer: suitable for short courses and minor misalignments.

Combined braces: ceramic on front teeth, metal on molars
Compromise

Combined

Ceramic on the front teeth, metal on the molars: invisible when speaking and reliable where the load is.

Lingual braces on the inner side of the teeth
On the inner side

Lingual braces

Attached to the inner side and completely invisible from the outside. Requires getting used to speaking during the first weeks.

Clear aligners and a jaw model
Removable

Clear aligners

A series of clear aligners, each moving the teeth by fractions of a millimeter. Removed for eating and cleaning.

The bottom line

What completed treatment delivers

An even row is the most noticeable result, but not the only one.

Patient reviewing the result of orthodontic treatment

The load is distributed evenly

The teeth come together as a whole group, not at two or three points. It is precisely this point overload that wears down enamel prematurely.

Hygiene becomes easier

The brush and floss reach where the teeth used to overlap. Cavities on the contact surfaces stop coming back.

Clicking in the joint goes away

When the lower jaw settles into its proper position, morning tension in the chewing muscles disappears.

Uneven wear stops

The cutting edges stop chipping, and restorations on the front teeth last longer.

Space for an implant appears

The neighboring teeth return to their positions, and prosthetics can be done without compromising on shape.

A retainer maintains the result

A thin archwire on the inner side is invisible when speaking and keeps the teeth from shifting back.

Appointment

How bite correction works in adults

The average course is from six months to two years. The difference depends on how far the teeth need to be moved, not on the system.

Consultation: dentist and patient at a screen with an X-ray — illustration for the section "Diagnostics and treatment plan"
Step 01

Diagnosis and treatment plan

The first stage is an examination, X-rays, and impressions. Based on this data, the doctor draws up a treatment plan and calculates the timeline and cost.

The orthodontist places braces on the patient
Step 02

Fitting the system

The second stage is fixing the chosen system: braces or aligners. The procedure takes from one to two hours.

The treatment stage itself: the doctor's gloved hands working in the oral cavity — an illustration for the "Periodic adjustments" section
Step 03

Periodic adjustments

Throughout the treatment you visit the doctor for scheduled adjustments: changing archwires, activating the system, and monitoring tooth movement.

Follow-up visit: the doctor checks the result with a mirror while the assistant holds the saliva ejector — illustration for the section "Removal of the system and retention period"
Step 04

Removing the system and the retention period

Once the planned result is achieved, the system is removed. Retainers are then fitted — removable or fixed appliances that hold the teeth in their new position.

Braces

The classic method is braces, which are attached to the teeth. There are ligature and self-ligating types. Ligature braces are fixed with rubber bands or wires; self-ligating braces have special clips. The choice of a specific system depends on the clinical picture.

Orthodontic Plates

Removable appliances for bite correction. They are most often used in children, but in some cases can be used in adults with minor irregularities.

Clear Aligners for Adults: What Are They and When Are They Suitable?

Clear aligners are transparent trays for correcting the bite. They are worn by adults who want to straighten their teeth without visible braces. Whether they are suitable for you depends on the clinical picture.

How aligners work

Clear aligners are made from a transparent polymer based on a digital impression of the teeth. The dentist creates a plan for tooth movement on a computer and then prints a series of trays. Each tray shifts the teeth by fractions of a millimeter. It must be worn almost all day, removed only for eating and brushing. After one to two weeks, the tray is replaced with the next one. This way the teeth gradually move into the desired position. The exact duration of treatment depends on the complexity of the case and the patient's discipline. The doctor monitors the process and adjusts the plan if necessary.

Who aligners are suitable for

  • Small gaps between teeth: aligners close diastemas and spaces without visible hardware.
  • Crowding: mild to moderate crowding can be straightened with aligners, but severe crowding requires braces.
  • Rotated teeth: aligners can handle rotation if the tooth root is fully formed.
  • Bite problems: aligners can help with deep or crossbite, but not in every case.
  • Adult patients: aligners suit those who want to avoid metal brackets and are willing to wear them 22 hours a day.

Equipment for Bite Correction

The technology an orthodontist uses determines the accuracy of diagnosis and the course of correction. Let's look at what equipment is used at different stages.

Diagnostic equipment

  • Cone beam CT: produces a three-dimensional image of the jaws, tooth roots, and temporomandibular joint. It is the basis for planning tooth movement and assessing bone condition.
  • 3Shape intraoral scanner: takes an impression of the dental arches without pastes or trays. The digital model is more accurate than a plaster one and can be rotated, measured, and used to calculate tooth movement.
  • Microscope with 25× magnification: helps the doctor examine the condition of enamel, fillings, and the gum margin before placing the appliance. Small defects invisible to the eye become visible under magnification.
  • Camera with a macro lens: records the position of teeth and soft tissues at the start of treatment and at every stage. The images allow the result to be compared and the plan to be adjusted.

Equipment for Fixation and Correction

  • Sandblaster: treats the enamel before bonding brackets. It creates a roughness that improves the adhesion of the adhesive to the tooth.
  • LED curing light: cures the composite used to attach the bracket or aligner. The curing time is controlled automatically.
  • Bracket pliers and tweezers: bend archwires, secure ligatures, and remove brackets. The instruments are selected for the specific system.
  • Bracket removal tool: squeezes the base of the bracket to detach it from the enamel without chipping. After removal, the surface is polished with a bur and a soft brush.

Life After Braces Removal

Removing braces is not the finish line, but a transition to a new stage. After long-term fixation, teeth are mobile, and without support they tend to return to their original position. To preserve the result, a retention period is required.

The First Month After Removal

Immediately after the archwires and brackets are removed, the doctor polishes the enamel and removes any remaining adhesive. For the first few days, teeth may be sensitive to cold and hot, and gums may be slightly swollen. This is a normal reaction to prolonged pressure. The doctor will take impressions for making retainers and schedule the date for their placement. During the first month, it is important to follow a gentle diet: avoid hard foods, nuts, seeds, and sticky candies. Teeth should be brushed with a soft brush, gently massaging the gums. If the retainer is removable, it is worn according to the schedule given by the orthodontist. Any tooth shifting or discomfort is a reason for an unscheduled visit. During this period, the foundation for the stability of the result is laid, so recommendations must not be neglected.

Long-Term Care

  • Retainers: wear them according to your doctor's schedule, usually around the clock for the first six months, then only at night. The duration of wear is individual.
  • Hygiene: clean around a fixed retainer with an interdental brush and a single-tuft brush, otherwise plaque builds up and the gums become inflamed.
  • Removable aligners: rinse them after each removal, store them in a container, and periodically clean them with special tablets.
  • Follow-up visits: see the orthodontist every 6–12 months to detect shifting in time and adjust the retention program.
  • Diet: limit staining foods and drinks so that the enamel stays light and the aligners do not become discolored.

Hygiene while wearing braces

Oral care with braces requires more time and attention. The appliance creates additional places for plaque to accumulate. If the rules are not followed, the risk of cavities and gum inflammation increases.

Daily routine

  • Brushing your teeth: do it after every meal, at least three times a day.
  • Toothbrush: use a soft or medium brush, and make sweeping motions from the gum toward the edge of the tooth.
  • Brackets: clean the area around each bracket, paying attention to the space under the archwire.
  • Interdental brushes: interdental brushes help remove plaque between the teeth and under the archwire.
  • Single-tuft brush: convenient for cleaning hard-to-reach places around the components of the appliance.
  • Water flosser: additionally rinses the space between the teeth and brackets while massaging the gums.
  • Mouthwash: use as prescribed by your doctor to reduce bacterial activity.

Diet and Habits

  • Avoid hard foods: nuts, croutons, and hard candies can damage the components of your braces.
  • Limit sticky foods: toffees, chewing gum, and nougat get stuck in braces and are hard to remove.
  • Cut food into pieces: apples, carrots, and corn are best eaten in small pieces rather than bitten off.
  • Cut back on sweets: sugar promotes plaque buildup, which accumulates faster around braces.
  • Avoid staining foods and drinks: tea, coffee, and berries can stain elastic ligatures.
  • Don't chew on foreign objects: pens, pencils, and fingernails can break the archwire or shift a bracket.

Tooth Stripping: Why Is It Needed?

Stripping is the grinding away of a thin layer of enamel from the side surfaces of teeth. The procedure creates additional space in the dental arch. It is often used in orthodontics.

Indications for Stripping

Stripping is indicated for crowded teeth when there is not enough space in the arch. It helps avoid extraction of healthy teeth before orthodontic treatment. The procedure is also used to correct tooth shape, for example, with triangular gaps between teeth. In some cases, stripping helps create proper contact points and improve oral hygiene. The decision on whether stripping is necessary is made by the orthodontist after a thorough examination and assessment of the clinical picture. They take into account the degree of crowding, tooth size, and the overall condition of the oral cavity. It is important to understand that stripping is not a universal method, but one of the tools in the specialist's hands. Its use depends on the specific situation and treatment goals.

How Stripping Is Performed

  • Examination and diagnosis: the dentist assesses the condition of the teeth and determines how much enamel needs to be reduced.
  • Anesthesia: in most cases the procedure is painless, but local anesthesia may be used if sensitivity is high.
  • Stripping: a thin layer of enamel is removed from the sides of the teeth using special diamond strips or discs.
  • Polishing: after separation, the enamel surface is polished to make it smooth and prevent plaque buildup.
  • Check: the dentist verifies the space created and adjusts it if necessary.

Bite Raising: When Is It Needed?

Bite raising is a change in the way the teeth come together to protect the enamel and the joint. The doctor decides whether such correction is needed based on specific symptoms.

Reasons for Bite Raising

  • Enamel wear: with a deep bite, teeth wear down faster, enamel thins, and sensitivity appears.
  • Cracks and chips: excessive load on the front teeth causes damage that requires restoration.
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction: clicking, pain when chewing, and headaches may be signs of a bite problem.
  • Gum recession: improper bite contact creates traumatic stress on the tissues, leading to gum recession.
  • Bruxism: teeth grinding during sleep increases wear, and raising the bite helps reduce muscle tension.

Methods of Bite Raising

MethodWhat it involvesWhen it is used
Composite restorationsBuilding up the chewing cuspsFor minor loss of bite height
Prosthetic crownsRestoring the height of the crown portionWhen tooth crowns are damaged
Orthodontic treatmentMoving teeth into the correct positionFor bite abnormalities
Prosthetic splintsTemporary bite raisingFor diagnosis and in cases of bruxism

Laser Bite Correction: Myth or Reality

There are many myths surrounding orthodontics. One of them is bite correction with a laser. Let's figure out what this method is and whether it actually exists.

What a Laser Can Do

Lasers in dentistry are used for various purposes, but not for moving teeth. They are used to correct soft tissues: cutting the lingual or labial frenulum, performing gingival contouring before placing braces or aligners. If the frenulum is short, it interferes with tooth closure and the stability of the result. A laser helps remove this obstacle quickly and with less bleeding than a scalpel. After such a procedure, tissues heal more calmly, which is convenient for both the patient and the doctor. In orthodontics, lasers are also used to accelerate tooth movement: low-intensity radiation stimulates blood circulation in bone tissue. This method is called laser therapy or biophoton therapy. Studies show that it can reduce discomfort in the first days after archwire activation. However, this is an auxiliary procedure, not a standalone way to correct the bite. The main work is done by braces or aligners. The decision to use a laser is made by the doctor based on the clinical picture.

What a laser does not do

  • It does not move teeth: the laser does not create the force needed to move roots; only braces or aligners do that.
  • It does not replace orthodontic treatment: without a braces system or aligners, the bite will not change; the laser is only an auxiliary tool.
  • It does not correct skeletal abnormalities: with pronounced bite problems related to the jaws, the laser cannot help; orthognathic surgery is needed.
  • It does not speed up treatment by 20–30%: data on its effect on treatment time are contradictory, and the effect depends on the individual and the clinical situation.
  • It does not treat cavities or strengthen enamel: those are tasks for other methods; in orthodontics, the laser works only with soft tissues or for stimulation.

How to choose a clinic for treatment?

Choosing a clinic for bite correction determines the course of treatment. Approach it thoughtfully: evaluate the equipment, the qualifications of the doctors, and the working conditions.

Selection criteria

When choosing a clinic, pay attention to several aspects. It is important that the orthodontist has modern diagnostic methods at their disposal: a cone-beam computed tomography scanner allows you to see the position of roots and joints in three dimensions, and an intraoral scanner takes impressions without discomfort. The availability of a microscope helps the doctor work more precisely, which is especially important when treating adult patients. It is also worth finding out what equipment is used for sterilizing instruments — class B autoclaves are considered a reliable processing method. Pay attention to the doctor's experience: ask how many years they have practiced specifically in orthodontics and which systems they prefer. The schedule is also important: the ability to visit the doctor at a convenient time, including weekends, makes the treatment process easier. The clinic's location and the availability of parking also matter if you plan regular visits. Finally, study reviews on independent platforms, but remember that each case is individual.

What to pay attention to during a consultation

The first consultation is an opportunity to evaluate the doctor's approach. A good specialist will not just examine the teeth but also conduct a full diagnosis: take X-rays, impressions, or scans, and study the condition of the temporomandibular joint. They should explain which bite correction method is suitable in your case and why, as well as talk about possible alternatives. Pay attention to whether the doctor asks questions about your complaints, lifestyle, and expectations — this is a sign of attentive care. Ask how the treatment will proceed, what stages lie ahead, and how often you need to visit the clinic. Find out who will manage you throughout the entire treatment: one doctor or several specialists. It is important that the treatment plan is clear and transparent, including timelines and cost. If the clinic offers a warranty on the work, clarify its terms. Trust your intuition: if something is unclear during the consultation or the doctor is in a hurry, it may be worth looking for another place.

Retainers: why are they needed?

After braces are removed, teeth tend to return to their previous position. To prevent this, the orthodontist fixes a retainer — a structure that holds the result. Let's look at what types there are and how long they are worn.

Types of retainers

TypeDescription
FixedA thin wire attached to the back of the teeth
RemovableA clear aligner made from a dental impression
CombinedA combination of wire and aligner for different jaws

How long to wear a retainer

The doctor determines the wearing period based on the initial pathology, age, and characteristics of the bone tissue. On average, a fixed wire is left in place for a period comparable to the duration of active treatment, and sometimes longer. A removable aligner is worn constantly at first, then switched to nighttime use. Regular checkups with the orthodontist allow timely adjustment of the regimen and assessment of the stability of tooth position. It is important for the patient to follow the recommendations, as the preservation of the result for many years depends on this.

Key points

Key takeaways

Correcting a bite in adults is a lengthy process that requires the involvement of an orthodontist and the patient. The treatment method is chosen after diagnostics: braces or aligners, sometimes with additional steps such as tooth separation or bite raising. The result is stabilized with retainers; otherwise, the teeth may return to their original position. Maintaining hygiene while wearing the appliances becomes a daily task, and visits to the doctor become regular. Laser technologies are used as an auxiliary tool, but the main tooth movement occurs through mechanics. The choice of clinic affects comfort and treatment monitoring, but the outcome depends on many factors, including individual characteristics and adherence to recommendations.

Recommendations

Before starting treatment, undergo a complete diagnostic evaluation, including tomography and dental scanning. Discuss with the orthodontist all possible options and their limitations. Follow the visit schedule and recommendations for wearing the appliances. Devote enough time to hygiene: brush your teeth after every meal, use interdental brushes and an oral irrigator. After the braces are removed, wear retainers as prescribed by the doctor. If questions or discomfort arise, contact the specialist without waiting for the next visit. Remember that the stability of the result depends on your participation in the process.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about bite correction

The cost of teeth straightening consists of several components: orthodontic consultation, diagnostics (impressions, X-rays), choice of treatment method (braces or aligners), and duration of therapy. The exact price can only be determined after an examination by the doctor, as each case is individual. For current prices for orthodontic treatment, see the pricing section on our website. We also offer installment plans for 24 months with Jusan bank or 12 months with Kaspi, allowing you to spread payments over a convenient period.

Yes, it is possible to correct a bite without braces if the anomaly is minor. For this, aligners are used — transparent trays that gradually move the teeth. However, for complex bite disorders, such as severe jaw displacement, orthodontic treatment with braces may be required. The exact treatment method will be determined by the orthodontist during the examination.

The time required to correct a bite depends on the complexity of the case and the chosen method. On average, treatment takes from one to two years. However, with aligners and minor irregularities, completion may be possible within a few months. The final timeline will be given by the orthodontist after diagnostics.

Tooth separation is a procedure of creating small gaps between teeth by grinding enamel from the side surfaces. It is often used before placing braces or aligners to create space for tooth movement. The procedure is safe and is performed under the doctor's supervision. The need for separation is determined by the orthodontist in each specific case.

The cost of braces depends on the type of braces (metal, ceramic, lingual) and the complexity of treatment. The price includes placement, adjustments, and removal of the system. The exact cost can only be determined after a consultation and treatment plan. Current prices for braces are listed in the pricing section on our website.

A bite correction aligner is a removable transparent tray used in orthodontics to move teeth. It is custom-made from impressions and is changed every few weeks. Aligners are effective for minor anomalies and are more aesthetic than braces. Whether this method is suitable for you will be determined by the orthodontist during the examination.

Yes, bite correction is possible at any age, and adult patients make up a significant portion of orthodontic patients. Modern methods such as braces and clear aligners are effective for adults as well. However, treatment may take longer than in teenagers because bone growth is complete. Our orthodontists will select the appropriate method after an examination.

Braces are fixed orthodontic appliances that are bonded to the teeth and require regular adjustments by the orthodontist. Clear aligners are removable transparent trays that are changed every few weeks. Braces are effective for complex malocclusions, while aligners are more aesthetic and easier to care for. The choice of method depends on the clinical situation and the patient's preferences.

The average duration of treatment with braces is one to three years, depending on the complexity of the malocclusion and the patient's age. In adults, treatment may take longer than in teenagers. The exact timeline is determined after a full diagnostic workup and treatment plan. Our orthodontists will provide you with a preliminary estimate at your first consultation.

Braces are placed in several stages: first, diagnostics and impressions are taken, then the teeth are cleaned and etched with a special gel. After that, a bracket is bonded to each tooth and the archwire is placed. The procedure takes about 1–2 hours and is painless. After placement, the orthodontist gives you care instructions and schedules your follow-up visits.

My bite had been shifting my lower jaw to the side for a long time. In my opinion, the main thing is that they don't pressure you into a decision. Ayaulym showed me everything on the X-ray. They corrected my bite, moving my teeth gradually. My bite closed properly, and chewing became more comfortable.

I was deciding between clear aligners and braces. The doctor honestly told me that in my case aligners wouldn't be able to move one canine, and suggested a combined system. I didn't argue, she explained it on the X-ray.

Strange, but I wasn't even tired after the appointment (I couldn't believe it myself). They corrected my bite and moved my teeth gradually; I wore the aligners without taking them out. That's what won me over. The result matched what they showed me in the plan. I'll keep coming here, no question about it. The sterility is visible, the instruments were opened in front of me, I'll note that separately. What won me over was that they didn't push anything unnecessary. They gave me the prices upfront, and nothing was added at the end. The receptionist called back when she promised, which never happened anywhere else before.

I made an appointment on the recommendation of a colleague from work. Braces were placed on both arches, and the treatment timeline was given right away (I asked twice to confirm). The contract and receipt were provided without me having to ask.
