Butterfly dental prosthesis in Almaty: what it is, who it suits, and how it is fitted

A removable micro-prosthesis replaces one to four consecutive teeth, most often in the anterior region. It is held in place by clasps that grip the adjacent teeth and can be removed by the patient. It is suitable as a temporary solution during implant treatment or orthodontic therapy. The exact choice is made by the dentist after examination and X-ray.

Can the Butterfly prosthesis be paid for in installments?

The clinic offers installments for 24 months with Jusan bank or 12 months with Kaspi. It can be arranged for a removable appliance, including the butterfly micro-prosthesis, the price of which depends on the number of teeth being replaced. The initial appointment — examination and treatment plan — is free of charge. The exact amount is provided by the dentist after the examination.

Stages of butterfly prosthesis placement

Consultation: doctor and patient at a screen with an X-ray — illustration for the section "Examination and treatment plan"
Step 01

Consultation and diagnostics

The dentist examines the oral cavity, prescribes cone-beam computed tomography if necessary, and takes impressions with a 3Shape intraoral scanner. At this stage, they discuss how much a butterfly prosthesis for 1 tooth costs, the price of which depends on the material and the number of supports.

Preparation: the assistant lays out sterile instruments, the dentist puts on gloves — illustration for the "Impressions" section
Step 02

Fabrication of the appliance

Based on the impressions, the base and clasps are modeled in the laboratory. The timeframe depends on the laboratory's workload and complexity. The patient is informed of the fitting date.

Step 03

Fitting and adjustment

During the fitting, the fit of the base, fixation of the clasps, color, and shape are checked. If necessary, the borders of the prosthesis are adjusted. The dentist uses a microscope with 25× magnification to control precision.

Follow-up visit: the dentist checks the result with a mirror while the assistant holds the saliva ejector — illustration for the "Fitting" section
Step 04

Fixation and recommendations

The finished appliance is placed, and the patient is taught the rules of hygiene and removal. A follow-up examination is scheduled. If discomfort occurs, adjustment is performed.

What is a micro-denture and what does it look like?

It is a small removable appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth. Colloquially, it is called a butterfly tooth denture — because of the shape of the saddle with two clasp "wings."

Design of the appliance

The base is a saddle made of polymer or metal that rests on the gum in the area of the defect. Two flexible arms extend from its sides and wrap around the adjacent teeth. These arms gave the appliance its name: when spread out, they resemble wings. The artificial tooth is attached to the saddle, and the clasps hold the appliance in the mouth. Fixation is removable: the patient takes it out at night and for hygiene. The chewing load is distributed between the gum and the supporting teeth, so the appliance is suitable for short defects. The arms should not press on the gum or interfere with the closing of the teeth. The doctor checks this at the fitting. If the adjacent teeth are mobile or have large fillings, their condition is assessed separately: this determines whether the appliance will be stable. The cost depends on the number of units being replaced and the material, but that is covered in the price section.

Appearance and materials

  • Artificial tooth: made from acrylic or composite; matched to the color of the adjacent teeth so the restoration blends into the smile.
  • Saddle: the base that rests on the gum; made from acrylic resin or metal, its shape follows the contour of the defect.
  • Clasps: flexible arms made of metal wire or polymer; they grip the abutment teeth and keep the restoration from shifting.
  • Color and shape: for anterior teeth the enamel shade is matched, for posterior teeth the anatomical cusp form is reproduced; the final appearance is agreed with the patient.
  • Thickness and weight: the restoration is thin, but its dimensions depend on the length of the defect; with two or more teeth the base is wider than with one.

How the appliance is held in the mouth

The Butterfly denture is held in the mouth by clasps — metal hooks that wrap around the adjacent teeth. How stably the appliance sits depends on their shape and the condition of the supporting teeth.

Types of clasps

  • Bent wire: a curved steel wire encircles the abutment tooth on two sides; it is bent during fitting of the denture if the restoration does not sit tightly.
  • Cast: the clasp is cast together with the base from an individual model; it follows the tooth relief more precisely and puts less pressure on the gum.
  • Telescopic: a system of two crowns — an outer and an inner one — the connection holds the restoration by friction, but requires preparation of the abutment teeth.
  • Clasps on inlays: instead of a crown, an inlay with a slot is placed in the tooth, and the matching part is fixed to it; this option preserves more tooth tissue.
  • Clasp-free: when there are no adjacent teeth for support, the denture is held by adhesion of the base to the mucosa, but stability during chewing is lower.

What stability depends on

The stability of a micro-denture is determined not only by the shape of the clasp but also by the condition of the supporting teeth. If the adjacent tooth is mobile, has deep caries, or is destroyed, the hook will not get reliable support. In such cases, the doctor decides whether the tooth can be used for fixation or whether the plan needs to be changed. The height of the clinical crown also matters: a short tooth is harder for the clasp to wrap around. The location of the defect also has an effect. In the anterior area, the load during biting is directed differently than in the posterior area, where chewing pressure is higher. Therefore, on the chewing teeth, the appliance experiences more displacing forces. Sometimes the denture requires relining after a few months — the base shrinks, and the fit changes. Bite pathology, bruxism, and the habit of biting nails all create additional load. The doctor makes the decision after an examination and X-rays. There is no universal answer that suits everyone: in one patient the denture holds up for years, in another it requires correction sooner. It depends on the clinical picture.

Is it suitable for front teeth?

Front teeth are visible when speaking and smiling, so more is expected of them. Let's look at when a "butterfly" is appropriate in this area and when the decision depends on the clinical picture.

Aesthetics of the anterior region

The anterior group is the most noticeable. Here, the color, shape, and thickness of the artificial tooth matter, as well as the gum line. The "butterfly" microprosthesis is made of acrylic or composite. Matching the shade to the neighboring teeth is possible, but not always perfect: natural enamel has a translucency that the material does not fully reproduce. If the smile is open, the difference may be noticeable under certain lighting. The dentist assesses how well the shade and shape will blend into the row. Sometimes it is enough to slightly change the color of the neighboring teeth so that the restoration does not stand out. When the gum line is uneven or the tooth is not positioned along the arch, fitting becomes more complicated. In such cases, the decision is made by the dentist after examination. For temporary replacement on a front tooth, this option is considered if the defect needs to be covered during treatment. A removable "butterfly" prosthesis in the anterior region is often used as an intermediate stage while the permanent restoration is being prepared. But aesthetics is not the only criterion—the load also matters.

What the doctor takes into account

  • Condition of the abutment teeth: the adjacent teeth must be stable, without mobility or deep damage, otherwise the restoration will not hold.
  • Bite and contacts: when the teeth close, the front teeth bear lateral loads, and the dentist checks whether the prosthesis will interfere or shift.
  • Gum line and tissue volume: if the gums have receded or there are irregularities, the fit requires additional preparation, and sometimes this option is not suitable.
  • Aesthetic expectations: the patient and dentist discuss shade, shape, and translucency so that the result matches the request (sometimes it is better to choose another method).
  • Duration and purpose of wear: for temporary replacement during implant treatment or orthodontics the requirements are one thing, for long-term use they are another.

How it differs from a permanent removable prosthesis

These are two different restorations with different logic. One covers the defect temporarily, the other replaces it for the long term. The difference is seen in the attachment, support, and extent.

When a temporary solution is chosen

A microprosthesis is placed when the defect needs to be covered temporarily. For example, while implantation or treatment of neighboring teeth is underway. It does not replace a permanent restoration but maintains aesthetics and function during the pause. A permanent removable prosthesis is chosen when there are few abutment teeth or the defect is large. It distributes the load more widely. The decision is made by the dentist after examination and imaging. Sometimes a patient searches for "butterfly tooth price," but cost is not the main criterion for choosing. The condition of the abutment teeth and the bite are more important. A butterfly crown is another name for the same restoration, not a separate type. If the defect is one tooth and the neighbors are strong, the temporary option is logical. If more teeth are missing, a permanent restoration provides broader support. But it also has limitations: bone atrophy, mobility of the abutments, allergy to the material. The dentist weighs all of this and proposes a plan.

How long does it last and when does it need to be replaced?

The lifespan of a microprosthesis is not fixed. It depends on care, the condition of the abutment teeth, and how often the restoration is removed. Some people wear it for years, others replace it sooner.

Signs of wear

  • Cracks in the base: the plastic around the abutment teeth thins out, chips appear, and plaque builds up underneath the appliance that can no longer be removed with a brush.
  • Loose clasps: the metal hooks no longer grip the tooth tightly, the small prosthesis rocks when chewing and speaking, and the gum underneath becomes irritated.
  • Discoloration of the material: acrylic absorbs pigments from tea, coffee, and tobacco, the surface becomes rough, and plaque clings to it more strongly.
  • Misfit with the tooth: if the abutment has shifted or the adjacent tooth has changed position, the appliance presses on the gum, rubs, and no longer seats properly.
  • Breakage of the connector: the thin section between the teeth breaks under accidental load, and then the small segment prosthesis requires remaking rather than an in-place repair.

What affects the lifespan

How long the restoration lasts is determined not by the product's specification sheet but by a combination of everyday and clinical circumstances. Hard food, the habit of biting nails or opening packages with teeth accelerate wear of the base. Nighttime grinding puts constant stress on the clasps. Hygiene also contributes: if the microprosthesis is removed after meals and cleaned with a separate brush, plaque does not have time to harden, and the material retains its color longer. The condition of the abutment teeth matters no less. Mobility of the abutment, exposure of the neck, inflammation of the gum around the clasp change the fit, and then the restoration must be replaced anyway. Changes in the mouth are also taken into account: neighboring teeth shift, the bite changes, and the old base no longer matches the new picture. There is no universal number. For some patients, the microprosthesis lasts a long time; for others, it is replaced noticeably sooner. The specific timeframe is given by the dentist after examination: they look at the condition of the abutments, the gums, and the base itself. If cracks, mobility, or discomfort appear, it is not worth delaying a visit.

How to care for the appliance

A removable microprosthesis requires daily care. Otherwise, plaque accumulates at the attachments, the gums become inflamed, and the abutment teeth suffer. The rules are simple, but they must be followed every day.

Daily hygiene

  • Removal: grasp the appliance by the arch or clasps, not by the artificial tooth, otherwise the attachment loosens and the base cracks.
  • Rinsing: after every meal, rinse the appliance with warm water to remove food debris from under the base and from the retention elements.
  • Brushing: use a soft brush with non-abrasive toothpaste on the base and clasps, and clean the inner surface that contacts the gum separately.
  • Abutment teeth: brush them as usual, and clean the spaces around the attachments with an interdental brush or a single-tufted brush, otherwise plaque remains in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Tablets: once a week, soak the appliance in a denture cleanser solution to remove pigment and bacterial plaque that brushing cannot eliminate.
  • Inspection: once a day, check whether the clasps are bent and whether there are cracks in the base, because even minor deformation changes the fit.

Storage and handling

At night, the appliance is stored in a closed container with clean water or a denture solution. When dry, an acrylic base can warp, and then the fit is compromised. Hot water is not used: it softens the material, and the appliance loses its shape. Special pastes and tablets are suitable for cleaning; ordinary laundry soap leaves a film. Abrasive powders and stiff brushes scratch the surface, bacteria accumulate in the scratches, and odor appears faster. Care rules do not depend on the number of teeth. A removable micro-prosthesis is taken out at night so that the gum can rest and the abutment teeth are not under constant pressure. If a crack, chip, or a feeling that the appliance sits differently appears, it is not repaired independently. They consult a doctor: he will decide whether the appliance can be repaired or a replacement is needed. The service life depends on the clinical picture and the owner's carefulness.

What equipment is used for diagnostics?

Before making a micro-prosthesis, the doctor assesses the condition of the mouth and adjacent teeth. Images and an examination are needed. Let's look at which instruments help at this stage.

Examination and images

First, the doctor examines the oral cavity and assesses how the adjacent teeth are positioned. Sometimes a butterfly prosthesis for a front tooth is planned when there are crowns or fillings nearby — their condition is also checked. Then images are taken. Cone-beam computed tomography provides a three-dimensional image of the jaw: roots, bone tissue, and sinuses are visible. From such an image, it is clear whether there is enough space for the clasps and whether there are hidden problems. An intraoral scanner takes a digital impression: instead of a tray with paste, a camera passes over the teeth. The impression is more accurate, and it is sent to the laboratory immediately. A microscope with 25× magnification helps examine enamel cracks and filling margins that are not visible to the eye. A laser is used in a targeted way if tissues need to be treated before taking the impression. All data are combined into one picture. The decision about the appliance is made by the doctor, and it depends on the clinical picture.

Laboratory stage

  • Digital impression: the scanner transmits the model to the software, and the technician can see it on screen and immediately check the fit.
  • Model printing: a jaw model is grown from the file, and the framework of the future microprosthesis is built on it, while also checking whether there is enough space for the clasps.
  • Framework try-in: the finished base is placed on the teeth to see whether the attachment presses on the gum or interferes with neighboring crowns.
  • Processing: class B autoclaves sterilize the instruments that come into contact with oral tissues during try-ins, while the framework itself is washed and dried.
  • Quality check: the dentist and the technician compare the color and shape with the natural teeth, and only then is the restoration given to the patient.

What is a Butterfly crown?

The name comes from the shape of the palate — a narrow plate with two extensions onto the abutment teeth. This is a temporary butterfly prosthesis that closes the defect while the main treatment is underway.

Differences from a removable appliance

A classic removable prosthesis is held on the palate by a wide base and clasps that wrap around the abutment teeth from the outside. The Butterfly is designed differently: instead of a base, there is a narrow arch; instead of clasps, there are two arms that extend onto the teeth from the lingual and buccal sides. The arms flex and are fixed in the undercuts, so the appliance sits more tightly and shifts less during speech. Its support area is noticeably smaller, and this changes the sensations in the mouth. The palate is almost not covered, taste and food temperature are felt more naturally, and speech is affected less. It is removed in the same way — with the fingers, by the arch, but the movements are simpler and faster. The difference also shows in hygiene: the Butterfly has fewer surfaces where plaque accumulates, which means less care is required. Chewing on the side where the appliance is placed is still not advisable — it is not designed for full chewing load. The doctor decides which option is suitable based on the clinical picture: where the defect is located, how many teeth are missing, and what the condition of the adjacent teeth is.

Removable micro-prosthesis: how it is made

In Kazakhstan, the appliance is made in dental laboratories at clinics and in private laboratories. Availability depends on the city, the laboratory, and the clinical picture.

Where it is made

The micro-prosthesis is made in a dental laboratory from an impression or a digital scan. In large cities there are more laboratories, so the choice is wider. In district centers, the work is often sent to the regional center, which lengthens the process. The appliance is made from acrylic or nylon — the material is chosen by the dentist based on the situation. The impression is taken at the clinic, and the rest of the work happens outside the office. Sometimes the prosthesis is designed on a 3Shape intraoral scanner and printed from a digital file. The timelines and the range of available options differ at each laboratory. What exactly will be offered in a specific case is decided by the dentist after an examination. A separate issue is who carries out the work: the technician receives the impression or file, pours the model, selects the shade of the base to match the neighboring teeth, and only then assembles the framework. If the impression is taken inaccurately, the fit has to be redone, and the patient comes in for another try-in. That is why the impression and the try-in are usually handled by the same dentist: they remember how the base fit the first time and notice what has changed.

What affects accessibility

  • Location: a major city has more laboratories, while in a small town the work is more often sent to the regional center, which lengthens the turnaround.
  • Material: acrylic and nylon are processed differently, and not every laboratory handles both options, so the choice narrows.
  • Equipment: a 3Shape digital scanner and cone-beam CT speed up data transfer, but their availability at a given laboratory is not guaranteed.
  • Clinical picture: with mobile adjacent teeth or an uneven row, the restoration is remade, and this affects the timeline and availability.
  • Laboratory workload: during vacation and holiday seasons the queue is longer and the wait stretches out, although no one gives a timeline in advance.

Key points

Key facts

A micro-prosthesis is a removable appliance for one or several teeth, secured with clasps on the adjacent abutment teeth. It is made from an impression or scan in a laboratory. It is worn temporarily: while implantation, treatment, or preparation for a permanent crown is underway. Care is standard — remove it at night, brush with a soft toothbrush, and rinse. The gums under the clasps need attention: plaque accumulates around the hooks, and without hygiene the tissue becomes inflamed. The appliance does not replace an implant and does not stop bone loss. It is a cosmetic and functional solution for a limited period. Whether it is suitable in a specific case is decided by the dentist after an examination and X-rays. Its service life depends on the clinical picture, material, load, and how carefully the patient handles it. If a clasp breaks or the base cracks, repair is not endless — sometimes it is easier to remake it.

What to pay attention to

The first point is the abutment teeth. If they are mobile or damaged, the clasps will not hold the appliance. The second is the bite: with a deep overbite, the prosthesis may interfere with closure, and the dentist checks this at the try-in. The third is hygiene: without it, inflammation appears under the hooks, and that becomes a separate treatment. The fourth is the base material: acrylic is cheaper but absorbs odors and dyes, while nylon and thermoplastics are more flexible and lighter. The fifth is aesthetics: metal clasps are visible on the front teeth, and this should be discussed in advance. The sixth is adaptation: in the first days, speech may change, and then it passes. The seventh is that if the appliance is needed during implantation, it is important not to press on the surgical area. The eighth is not to bend the clasps yourself: the metal breaks at the bend point. If there is discomfort, a follow-up examination is needed, not waiting.

Questions about the butterfly prosthesis

The price of a "Butterfly" denture depends on the number of teeth being replaced, the material of the base and clasps, and any preparation of the abutment teeth before fitting. The dentist gives you the total at the consultation after assessing your clinical situation and recommending a specific design. For price guidelines, see the pricing section on this page — it lists the current price list items. Treatment can be paid for in installments for 24 months with Jusan bank or 12 months with Kaspi.

The "Butterfly" denture replaces one to three consecutive missing teeth, and that is its working range. The appliance is held in place by clasps on the adjacent abutment teeth, so the shorter the gap, the more reliable the retention and the less stress on the abutments. If more than three teeth are missing in a single arch, the dentist will suggest another prosthetic option at the consultation — for example, a clasp-retained partial or a complete removable denture. You can book a consultation in Almaty by calling the clinic; the initial examination and treatment plan are free of charge.

Yes, the "Butterfly" denture is often used specifically on front teeth because it is discreet and quickly restores the aesthetics of the smile. The base and clasps are matched to the color of the adjacent teeth so that the appliance does not stand out when you speak or smile. In the front area, the biting load is higher, so the dentist may recommend a stronger material or additional reinforcement of the abutments. The final decision is made after an examination and assessment of your bite.

Yes, this is one of the most common uses of the micro-denture: while the implant is integrating, the "Butterfly" covers the gap and maintains aesthetics. Wearing the temporary appliance does not interfere with osseointegration, provided the dentist has distributed the load correctly and it does not rest on the implant site. The lifespan of such a temporary solution is usually limited to a few months, after which a permanent crown is placed on the implant. The exact timing and the need for interim check-ups are determined by the implantologist at your appointment.

The production time for a "Butterfly" denture depends on the number of missing teeth, the condition of the abutment teeth, and the chosen material for the base and clasps. If the abutment teeth are healthy and need no preparation, the appliance is made faster; if treatment, new impressions, or a re-fitting are needed, the timeline is longer. On average, the process takes several visits: examination, impressions, fitting, and fixation. The dentist gives you exact dates after the examination, as they depend on your specific clinical situation.

The "Butterfly" denture does have contraindications, and they are mainly related to the condition of the abutment teeth and the oral cavity. The appliance is not placed if the abutment teeth are mobile, affected by deep decay or inflammation, or if there is a pronounced allergy to the base materials. It is also unsuitable when a large number of consecutive teeth are missing and a different design is needed. Before fitting, the dentist performs an examination and, if necessary, prescribes treatment so that the denture can be worn without complications.

At our clinic, the "Butterfly" denture comes with a warranty of up to 5 years — the term depends on the material and the clinical situation. The warranty does not cover mechanical damage caused by drops, self-repair, or failure to follow care instructions. To keep the appliance in good condition, it should be removed at night, cleaned with a soft brush, and brought in for check-ups. The dentist records the warranty terms in the contract after the denture is fitted.

Yes, you can book a consultation for a Butterfly denture in Almaty by calling the clinic or using the online booking form on the website. The initial examination and treatment plan are free of charge; during the appointment, the doctor will assess the condition of your teeth and tell you whether this appliance is suitable for you. The clinic is open daily from 9:00 to 20:00, and free parking is available for patients. If prosthetics require preliminary treatment, its stages will also be outlined during the consultation.

The Butterfly denture is a micro-denture that replaces one to three teeth and does not cover the palate, unlike a classic removable appliance. Because of its small size, it is almost invisible in the mouth, does not affect taste perception or speech, and requires less time to get used to. A conventional removable denture is needed for extensive defects in the dental arch, when a micro-denture can no longer handle the load. The doctor determines which option suits you after an examination and X-rays.

In most cases, supporting teeth do not need to be ground down for a Butterfly denture: the appliance is secured with clasps that wrap around the tooth without preparation. This is one of the main advantages of a micro-denture — the adjacent teeth remain intact and do not lose enamel. Slight preparation is possible only with pronounced tilting or uneven positioning of the support, and in that case the doctor plans the extent of the intervention in advance. If the supporting tooth is affected by caries, treatment is carried out first, and only then is the denture made.

I needed a second opinion. . . And that was it. Chewing became comfortable from the very first day. Sanzhar laid out the plan in detail. The old bridge was replaced with crowns, and everything was done on schedule.

I've disliked dentists since childhood. I got a zirconia crown, and a temporary crown was placed right away. Chewing became comfortable from the very first day. I recommend this clinic. Sterility is visible, instruments were opened in front of me. That's what won me over. Let me put it this way: the recommendations here aren't just for show. They scheduled me at a convenient time, no "come at nine and wait." They set up my file right away, asked for my passport only once, and that's what wins you over)

The old crown darkened along the edge and became noticeable. Never regretted it once (couldn't believe it myself). The old bridge was replaced with crowns. There was some inconvenience — I had to ask twice about the timeline. A minor thing!

I didn't think they'd manage it in a single visit, but they fitted a zirconia crown and checked my bite at the end. The crown is indistinguishable from my own teeth, and it feels just like my own. I'll be back for a professional cleaning. The lab made it in nine days, just as promised, no complaints there. They opened my file right away and only asked for my passport once. They even answered my questions after the appointment, over messenger (I couldn't believe it myself). The impression was taken with a scanner, no tray or impression material in my mouth!

The bridge lasted twelve years and started to loosen. The color matched, no one notices anything, they've already gotten used to the idea that it's all behind them. The crown was color-matched to the neighboring teeth, and the bite was checked at the end. I put it off for a long time. Thanks to the whole team.
