Retainers in Almaty: price, installation, removal and replacement

A retainer is a device that holds teeth in place after braces are removed. It can be removable or fixed. The price depends on the type, material, and number of teeth, so the exact amount is given after an examination. Care, wear time, and replacement are discussed with the orthodontist at follow-up visits.

We state the amount in the written plan before treatment begins

After the examination and X-ray, the doctor draws up a plan: what we will do, which materials will be used, how long it will take, and what the total cost will be. Any work that not everyone needs is named by the doctor before treatment starts, not along the way. 0% installment plans: Jusan bank — 24 months, Kaspi — 12 months, and payment from the UAPF is available. Prices marked "from" are the lower limit according to the clinic's price list; the estimate for your case is provided at the free consultation.

Home care for a retainer

After braces are removed, the appliance holds the teeth in their new position. How long it lasts and whether it will need to be replaced earlier depends on regular care.

Hygiene of a removable aligner and plate

A removable aligner or plate is taken out before eating and brushing teeth. At home, rinse it with cool water to remove saliva and plaque residue. Then use a soft brush without toothpaste: abrasives leave scratches on the clear plastic, plaque gets trapped in them, and the aligner becomes cloudy. Once a day, the appliance can be soaked in a special solution from the pharmacy. Boiling water and hot water deform the plastic. Store the aligner in a container, not on a napkin or in a pocket: this way it will not be lost or broken. If a removable plate with metal hooks remains in the mouth, plaque accumulates around them. The hooks are cleaned with an interdental brush. Tartar on the appliance itself is removed in the office — it cannot be removed at home. The aligner must not be bent or adjusted on your own: the plastic cracks under pressure, and then replacement is needed. The appliance is examined by the doctor every six months.

Cleaning a fixed wire: products and techniques

  • Interdental brush: a thin brush is passed along the arch on both sides — the tongue side and the lip side — otherwise plaque remains right next to the metal.
  • Dental floss: under the arch, floss is passed using a superfloss or a floss with a stiff end; regular floss doesn't work there and breaks.
  • Single-tufted brush: it cleans the area around brackets and wires where a regular brush can't reach — that's where gum inflammation most often starts.
  • Water flosser: the stream washes out food debris from hard-to-reach places, but it doesn't replace a brush and floss, it only complements them.
  • Mouthwash: an alcohol-free rinse freshens breath, but it doesn't remove plaque — it's not a substitute for mechanical cleaning.
  • Mirror: a small mirror helps you inspect the arch from the inside, where plaque is hardest to see, and spot problems in time.

What damages the appliance

  • Hot water: boiling water and hot tea deform the plastic of a removable aligner, and it stops fitting snugly on the teeth.
  • Hard food: nuts, croutons, hard candy, and fruit pits chip off pieces from the arch and the plastic.
  • Nails and teeth: the habit of removing the aligner with your teeth or biting its edge breaks the appliance faster than anything else.
  • Abrasive toothpaste: large particles scratch the clear plastic, making it cloudy, causing it to absorb odors, and ruining its appearance.
  • Tissue and pocket: an aligner left without its case is easily lost, dropped, and cracked by accidental pressure.
  • Sports without protection: on contact with a ball or in a fight, the arch bends and the attachment comes off the tooth.

When to see a doctor

Reasons to call the clinic include a crack in the retainer, a bent archwire, or a loose bracket. If the appliance no longer fits onto the teeth, presses on the gum, or rubs the cheek, there is no need to wait for a scheduled appointment. Bleeding gums around the archwire, a persistent odor from the retainer, or a loose tooth are also reasons to come in earlier. Never bend the archwire yourself with pliers: the metal breaks and the tooth shifts. Do not trim a removable retainer with scissors or file it down with a nail file. If the retainer is lost, a new one is made from an impression. Before the visit, try not to load the teeth or bite hard objects. At the appointment, the doctor examines the condition of the teeth and the appliance itself, so decisions are made in the office, not over the phone. If the retainer presses or rubs, do not adjust it at home: the edge is treated by the doctor. Sometimes polishing the edge is enough, sometimes replacement is needed. Do not delay the visit: a small break eventually turns into a more serious problem.

How long do you need to wear retainers?

The duration of retainer wear is determined by the doctor based on the clinical picture. There is no universal number: one patient is prescribed a year, another longer. Below we explain what this depends on.

What determines how long you wear them

  • Underlying condition: with crowding or a deep bite, the retention period is usually longer than after a minor movement of a single tooth.
  • Age: in adolescents, bone tissue remodels more actively; in adults, stabilization takes longer, and the doctor decides.
  • Degree of tooth mobility: if teeth shift after the braces are removed, the retention period is extended, and sometimes the appliance is changed.
  • Periodontal condition: with gum disease, retention is planned differently, and here the clinical picture is the guide, not the price.
  • Accuracy of the previous stage: the more precisely the teeth were aligned, the smoother retention goes, but the outcome cannot be predicted in advance.

Mode: full-time, nighttime, or mixed

ModeWhen it is prescribedWhat it means
ContinuousThe first months after braces are removedThe aligner or plate is not removed, except for eating and hygiene
NighttimeWhen teeth are in a stable positionWorn only during sleep
MixedTransitional stageSeveral hours during the day, continuously at night
FixedWhen there is a risk of shiftingA wire is bonded to the inner side of the teeth

Why you should not remove it on your own

Teeth retain a memory of their previous position, and without retention they gradually return. This is not an instant process: shifting occurs over weeks and months, often unnoticed by the person themselves. When a patient decides on their own that it is enough and removes the retainer, the result of orthodontic treatment can be undone. Sometimes the relapse is noticeable within a few weeks, sometimes later, but it cannot be predicted in advance. The doctor removes the retainer only after assessing stability, and this decision is not a formality. If the appliance is uncomfortable, rubs, or breaks, the right step is to come in for an appointment, not to stop using it on your own. Repeat treatment usually costs more than a new retainer, so removing it yourself is rarely worthwhile. The gums and periodontal ligaments also do not adapt immediately, and they need time to secure the new position. The longer the appliance stays in place, the calmer the tissues behave, but the final duration is determined by the doctor.

Follow-up visits and plan adjustment

The retention plan is not set in stone. The doctor schedules follow-up visits to assess how the teeth and gums are behaving. At the appointment, the fit of the retainer or the integrity of the fixed wire is checked, and the bite and condition of the surrounding tissues are examined. Based on the results, the duration may be extended, shortened, or the mode changed — for example, from full-time to nighttime. Sometimes tightening the wire is enough, sometimes a new retainer is needed. These visits should be no less frequent than the doctor advises, and they should not be skipped: it is at the examination that things the patient does not notice themselves become visible. If pain appears, a tooth becomes loose, or the retainer stops holding, a visit is scheduled outside the regular schedule. At the examination, the doctor may polish the edge of the retainer or adjust the wire so it does not press. Sometimes only the wearing mode changes, while the appliance itself remains the same. All of this is decided based on the clinical picture, not on a pre-set schedule.

If you miss several days

Missing a couple of days does not always lead to shifting, but it cannot be called safe either. Much depends on the initial situation: in one person the teeth are stable, in another they react quickly. If the retainer has not been worn for a week or more, it may no longer fit — then a consultation is needed, and sometimes a new one must be made. Do not force an appliance that does not fit: this can damage a tooth or the gum. Come in for an appointment, and the doctor will assess the situation and tell you what to do next. Restoring the routine is usually easier than correcting a relapse all over again. Sometimes it is enough to return to the previous wearing schedule, and the teeth gradually move back into place. In other cases, the retainer no longer fits and is remade from a new impression. What exactly is needed is decided by the doctor after the examination. Do not expect everything to resolve on its own: the sooner you seek help, the easier it is to correct the situation.

Equipment for making retainers

Fabricating a retainer is a separate laboratory stage. It begins with taking an impression or a scan and ends with a finished appliance on a model of the jaw.

Impressions and digital scans

The work starts with an exact copy of the dental arch. The classic route is an impression tray and impression material: alginate or silicone. Silicone captures a sharper relief in the cervical area, where the edge of the appliance meets the enamel. Alginate is cheaper, but it shrinks faster, and the impression must be poured within half an hour. The digital route is different: an intraoral scanner captures an optical model without a tray or material. The patient does not have to sit with an open mouth while the impression sets, there is no gag reflex, and the file goes straight to the laboratory. The accuracy of the scan depends on how dry the working field is and how deeply the scanning head could be inserted. The dentist decides: in some cases a scan is more convenient, in others an impression is more reliable — for example, with a deep bite or mobile teeth. Sometimes both methods are combined.

Laboratory stages

  1. Model: the impression is poured in dental stone or printed from a scan file to obtain an exact replica of the dental arch including the cervical area.
  2. Marking: the technician marks the boundaries of the future appliance on the model, checks the fit against each tooth and the tightness of contact with the enamel.
  3. Fabrication: the appliance is formed on the model or printed, then the edges are ground, the surface is polished and excess material is removed.
  4. Try-in: the finished appliance is checked first on the model, then in the oral cavity — for fit, seating and absence of pressure on the gum.
  5. Fixation: the fixed version is cemented with composite; the removable one is given to the patient together with instructions for care and storage.

Appliance materials

  • Metal: stainless steel or alloy wire — a rigid appliance that is bonded to the teeth with composite on the lingual side.
  • Polymer: clear or tinted plastic, used to make removable retainers and some fixed versions; the material holds its shape well.
  • Composite: reinforcing fibers that are embedded in flowable composite directly in the oral cavity or in the laboratory, producing a thin appliance.
  • Ceramic: used rarely, more often in combination with metal when esthetics are needed in a visible area, but the material is fragile.
  • Model dental stone: a consumable material for pouring the working model on which the appliance is formed and adjusted before placement.

Thermoforming and printing of aligners

Removable aligners are made in two ways. Thermoforming: a plastic sheet is heated and pressed over a plaster model under pressure or vacuum. The material reproduces the relief of the teeth and gums, then the edges are trimmed and polished. The thickness of the sheet is chosen according to the task: a thin one is less noticeable, a thick one holds its shape more rigidly. The second route is printing on a 3D printer from a digital scan file. The model is built layer by layer from photopolymer, then washed in alcohol and dried under a UV lamp. Printing is convenient when the appliance needs to be reproduced or the file sent to another laboratory. The strength and fit depend on the printer, the resin, and post-processing. What suits a particular case is decided by the dentist together with the technician. Each method has its advantages: thermoforming is more familiar, printing is faster for repeats. The choice depends on the clinical picture and the treatment goals.

What to remember

The retainer holds the result

After the braces are removed, the teeth retain a memory of their previous position. The periodontal fibers, bone tissue, and gums do not adapt immediately. The retaining appliance does not move the teeth again; it holds them where they were placed. Without fixation, relapse is possible: the teeth shift, gaps open up, the inclination changes. A removable aligner or a fixed wire work on the same principle — retention. Which option is suitable is decided by the dentist based on the clinical picture: the position of the teeth, the condition of the periodontium, age, and hygiene. Sometimes both types are used: a wire on one jaw, an aligner on the other. This is not overcaution but a way to cover different areas. A retainer does not treat, does not align, does not correct the bite. Its task is to hold what has already been achieved. If it is removed ahead of schedule, the teeth may return to their original position. How much depends on the case.

Wear schedule and care are determined by the dentist

How many hours a day to wear a removable aligner, how often to take it out, whether you can eat and drink while wearing it — there are no universal rules. The dentist prescribes a schedule for each specific situation: one person wears the aligner only at night, another around the clock for the first months. You must not change the regimen on your own. If the aligner presses, rubs, or falls off, that is a reason to come in for an appointment, not to endure it or file it down at home. Care is also individual: for some, rinsing with cool water and brushing with a soft brush is enough; for others, special cleaning tablets are needed. Boiling water and hot water deform the plastic. A fixed wire is cleaned with dental floss, an interdental brush, and a single-tuft brush around the attachments. Plaque that remains causes gum inflammation and caries. Then treatment has to be paused. Follow-up visits show whether the chosen regimen is working.

The price is made up of several components

The cost of a retainer is not just a single number. A removable aligner and a fixed wire are different products, made with different techniques and materials. The price depends on: the type of appliance, the number of arches, the manufacturing method, whether impressions or scanning are needed, and the complexity of placement. Sometimes the fee includes fabrication, sometimes only fitting, with the appliance itself billed separately. A removable aligner is cheaper than a fixed wire but needs to be replaced more often. A fixed wire lasts longer, but its placement and removal are separate procedures. If the appliance is made in a lab, the timeline and cost depend on the lab's workload and the material. The exact amount is quoted after an examination and a treatment plan. The numbers come from the clinic's fee schedule. You cannot compare prices between clinics by a single figure: it covers different sets of services.

Replacement and repair

A retainer is not a permanent item. A removable aligner eventually cracks, loses its shape, and yellows. A fixed wire can come loose from a tooth, bend, or break while chewing. What to do in each case is up to the doctor. Sometimes re-bonding the wire is enough; sometimes a new one must be made. A cracked aligner cannot always be repaired: if its geometry is compromised, it will not hold the teeth correctly. In that case, a replacement is made. Losing a retainer is no reason to panic, but it is also no reason to wait for months. Teeth without retention start to shift. The sooner you come in, the easier it is to restore retention. If a fixed wire breaks, do not try to straighten it yourself: you can scratch the enamel or injure the gum. Come in for an appointment. The doctor will assess the situation and suggest an option.

Follow-up with the orthodontist

Follow-up does not end when the braces come off. Visits are frequent in the first months, then less often. The doctor checks how the retainer fits, whether there is any shifting, inflammation, or plaque. If needed, they adjust the wear schedule or replace the appliance. If you have moved or changed clinics, bring a summary: the type of retainer, the date it was placed, and the recommendations. This will help a new specialist get up to speed faster. You must not stop wearing it on your own, even if your teeth look straight. The decision to stop is made by the doctor based on the clinical picture. Sometimes a retainer is kept for years, sometimes it is removed earlier. There is no universal timeline. Regular check-ups are how you catch a problem early and get away with a minor adjustment. At an appointment, the doctor examines not only the teeth but also the condition of the gum around the appliance. If you have questions, it is best to ask them at a check-up rather than put them off until the next visit.

Questions about retainers

A retainer for one jaw starts at 20,000 ₸ according to the clinic's price list. The cost of retainers depends on the type of appliance — removable or fixed, the material and the number of teeth that need to be held in place, as well as the dentist's work on fitting and taking impressions. The laboratory fabrication of the retainer and its bonding are calculated separately, so the final amount depends on the clinical case and is quoted by the dentist at the examination after diagnostics. For exact figures, see the pricing section on this page, where installment options are also listed. You can book a consultation by phone or through the form on the website.

The price of retainer removal depends on the type of appliance: a fixed wire is removed with a special instrument, while a removable aligner is simply taken out, so the cost of the procedure differs. The price includes the doctor's work and, if necessary, enamel polishing after removal and repeat diagnostics. If the retainer is removed before placing a new one, this is processed as a separate procedure. For current figures, see the price section; appointments are available daily.

The price of retainers after braces includes the fabrication of the appliance and its bonding, as well as impressions or scanning if needed. A fixed wire retainer is usually placed on the front teeth, while a removable aligner is made from an individual impression, so the cost depends on the chosen option and the number of teeth. Sometimes the removal of the braces and professional hygiene before placement are added to the amount. The exact cost will be given by the doctor during the examination, and figures are available in the price section.

How much retainer placement costs is determined by the type of appliance, the material, and the amount of work: a fixed wire requires bonding to each tooth, while a removable aligner is made in the laboratory from an impression. The amount includes diagnostics, impressions or scanning, the doctor's work, and the retainer itself, so figures differ for different clinical cases. The cost of retainers also depends on whether the appliance is placed immediately after braces removal or after some time. For all current prices, see the price section; you can schedule by phone.

How much it costs to place retainers depends on whether they are placed on one jaw or both: with full retention, the amount consists of two appliances and two bondings. If fixed wires are placed, they are attached to each tooth, which increases appointment time and material consumption, while removable aligners are made as a pair from impressions. Sometimes a removable retainer is made for the upper jaw and a fixed one for the lower jaw, and this also affects the total. For exact figures, see the price section; the doctor will give them after the examination.

How much it costs to remove a retainer and place a new one depends on the type of appliances: removing a fixed wire requires an instrument and polishing, while making and bonding a new retainer includes an impression, a laboratory stage, and the doctor's work. Sometimes the old appliance can be repaired, and then replacement is not needed, but the orthodontist decides this after an examination. The amount may also include diagnostics and professional hygiene before placement. For exact figures, see the price section; the doctor will give them at the appointment.

The cost of retainers includes diagnostics, impressions or scanning of the dental arch, fabrication of the appliance in the laboratory, and its fitting, and for a removable option, also care instructions. If the retainer is placed immediately after braces removal, the amount may include removal of the braces system and professional cleaning, which affects the final figure. Removal of the retainer is paid separately if it is replaced or removed for clinical reasons. For exact prices, see the price list section; the doctor will provide them after an examination.

If the retainer breaks or is lost, you should schedule an appointment with the orthodontist as soon as possible, because without retention the teeth may begin to shift back within the first few weeks. Before the visit, keep the broken appliance or its fragments, do not try to repair the retainer yourself, and do not wear a damaged aligner. The doctor will assess the condition of the dental arch, make an impression or scan if necessary, and fabricate a new retainer. You can schedule a consultation by phone or through the form on the website.

No, retainers do not correct the bite; they only hold the teeth in the position already achieved with braces or aligners. Their job is to prevent the teeth from shifting back while the bone tissue and ligaments adapt to the new position, so a retainer cannot straighten the dental arch on its own. If time has passed after orthodontic treatment and the teeth have shifted, the doctor may suggest retreatment, with retainers placed afterward. You can schedule a consultation with the orthodontist by phone or through the form on the website.

In our clinic, the warranty on orthodontic appliances, including retainers, is up to 5 years, but the terms depend on the type of retainer and compliance with the doctor's recommendations. The warranty does not cover cases where the retainer is broken due to trauma, biting hard food, or failure to attend follow-up examinations, so it is important to come for check-ups on schedule. If the appliance becomes loose or breaks, the doctor will assess the situation and suggest a solution. You can schedule an appointment by phone or through the form on the website.

We came from another area. Came in for a consultation and stayed for treatment. They laid out the treatment plan by stages and by cost (I asked twice to confirm). Not painful at all. I've already recommended it to friends. We set up an installment plan right there, no running around to banks — I want to highlight that separately. They scheduled us for a convenient time, no "come at nine and wait" — that's how it should be. They created the chart right away, asked for my passport only once, no complaints about that!

Our whole family received treatment here, and everything was done in one visit. The office is bright and the equipment is new (I asked twice to confirm). We're happy with the result, and that's what matters most.
