Tooth extraction

The price of tooth extraction depends on the complexity: the location, the condition of the roots, and the presence of inflammation. The exact cost will be given by the doctor after an examination and X-ray diagnostics. The clinic provides the initial examination and treatment plan free of charge. An installment plan for 24 months with Jusan bank or 12 months with Kaspi is available.

Types of tooth extraction in Almaty

Classification helps to understand how one type of intervention differs from another.

Simple extraction

A simple extraction is performed with forceps and elevators when the tooth is located above the gum and has straight roots. The procedure takes a few minutes and is performed under local anesthesia.

Complex extraction

A complex extraction is required for ectopic or impacted teeth, as well as for a destroyed crown. The surgeon makes an incision in the gum, removes bone tissue if necessary, and extracts the tooth in pieces. The operation is performed under anesthesia and may take up to an hour.

Wisdom tooth extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction is a separate type of surgical intervention due to the specific location of the third molars. They often erupt only partially or grow sideways, so they require a complex extraction. A CT scan is performed before the operation.

The doctor shows the patient the scan on the screen and explains the treatment plan — an illustration for the "Wisdom tooth removal" section

Complications after removal

After tooth extraction, swelling, pain, and slight bleeding are possible — this is a normal reaction. Complications include alveolitis (inflammation of the socket), bleeding that does not stop, and damage to adjacent teeth. If such symptoms appear, you should consult a doctor.

Step 01

Consultation and diagnostics

The first stage is an examination by the dentist and an X-ray. The doctor assesses the condition of the tooth and roots, identifies inflammation, and determines the complexity of the extraction. After diagnostics, a treatment plan is drawn up and the cost is calculated.

Step 02

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered before the extraction. The doctor uses modern anesthetics that provide complete pain relief during the procedure. For complex operations, sedation may be used.

Step 03

Tooth extraction

The surgeon performs the tooth extraction: simple or complex, depending on the clinical situation. For a complex extraction, an incision is made, a flap is raised, the tooth is extracted, the socket is treated with an antiseptic, and sutures are placed.

What to do after tooth extraction?

After tooth extraction, it is important to properly care for the socket to avoid complications. Following simple rules speeds up healing and reduces discomfort. In the first days, monitor the condition especially carefully.

The first hours after the procedure

  • Bite on a gauze pad: keep it in place for 20–30 minutes, then remove it gently. If bleeding continues, replace the pad and contact your dentist.
  • Do not rinse your mouth: during the first 24 hours this can wash away the protective blood clot that forms in the socket and is essential for healing.
  • Apply cold: ice or a frozen item wrapped in cloth, held against the cheek on the side of the extraction, will help reduce swelling and ease pain.
  • Take pain relief: if the pain is significant, take the medication recommended by your dentist. Follow the instructions and do not exceed the dosage.
  • Avoid hot food and drinks: in the first few hours they can increase bleeding and slow clot formation.
  • Rest: on the day of the procedure, avoid physical exertion and overheating. This will help your body recover.

What to avoid in the first days

  • Do not touch the socket with your tongue or fingers: this can infect the wound and interfere with healing.
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol: nicotine and alcohol impair blood supply and slow tissue recovery.
  • Avoid hard and spicy food: opt for soft, warm food so as not to injure the extraction site.
  • Do not rinse your mouth vigorously: if your dentist has prescribed antiseptic rinses, do them gently, taking the solution into your mouth and tilting your head.
  • Do not take hot baths or visit saunas: overheating can trigger bleeding.
  • Do not exercise: intense activity raises blood pressure and can cause bleeding from the socket.

Complex extraction: when is it required?

Dentists call an extraction complex when the tooth cannot be removed with standard forceps and an elevator. The doctor assesses the situation in advance using the X-ray and plans the course of the operation.

Signs of a complex extraction

  • Curved roots: if the roots are hooked or splayed to the sides, they catch on the bone and the tooth cannot be dislodged in one piece.
  • Broken-down crown: when only walls or fragments remain above the gum, the instrument has nothing to grip, and access to the roots has to be created.
  • Wisdom tooth: third molars often lie horizontally or press against the adjacent tooth, so they are removed in sections through a small incision.
  • Roots fused to the bone: in some conditions the root and bone tissue form a single block, which requires separating them from each other.
  • Remnants from previous treatment: if the crown is broken off below the gum or the root has crumbled, the procedure becomes more complicated because the fragments must be located and removed.

Stages of a complex extraction

  1. Diagnosis: the dentist studies the X-ray, assesses the shape of the roots and their proximity to nerves, then chooses the technique and type of anesthesia.
  2. Anesthesia: local anesthetics are used; in rare cases sedation is employed to keep the patient calm.
  3. Access: if the tooth is hidden under the gum or bone, the surgeon lifts a flap and, if necessary, removes some bone tissue.
  4. Extraction: the tooth is divided into fragments with a drill and each is carefully removed; this reduces trauma to the surrounding tissues.
  5. Socket treatment: the wound is rinsed with an antiseptic, medication is placed if needed, and sutures are applied for better healing.

Baby tooth extraction in a child

Baby teeth become loose and fall out on their own, but sometimes a dentist's help is necessary. It is important for parents to understand when intervention is truly needed and when it is better to wait.

When a baby tooth needs to be extracted

  • Severe destruction: decay or trauma has destroyed most of the crown, and it cannot be restored with a filling or crown.
  • Root inflammation: periodontitis or a cyst, where the infection threatens the developing permanent tooth, requires urgent extraction.
  • Delayed root resorption: the baby tooth is blocking the eruption of the permanent tooth, even though it should have fallen out already.
  • Acute pain: if the tooth hurts severely and treatment does not help, the dentist may decide to extract it to relieve the child's condition.
  • Orthodontic indications: sometimes extraction of baby teeth is necessary for proper jaw growth and bite formation.

How extraction is performed in children

A pediatric dentist first examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to assess the condition of the roots and the developing permanent tooth. Then they choose anesthesia: usually topical or infiltration, so the child doesn't feel pain. The extraction itself is performed with gentle instruments that don't damage the surrounding tissues. The doctor carefully loosens the tooth and removes it, then places a gauze pad to stop the bleeding. The procedure takes a few minutes. In complex cases, when the roots are curved or there is inflammation, a more thorough intervention may be needed. After extraction, it's important to follow the doctor's recommendations: don't eat or drink anything hot for two hours, avoid vigorous rinsing so you don't wash out the protective clot. If the child develops a fever or the pain worsens, you should see a doctor. Parents should remember that the cost of treating a dental abscess can vary depending on the clinic and the complexity of the case, so it's best to ask about prices in advance.

General anesthesia or sedation: which to choose?

Tooth extraction under general anesthesia or sedation are different approaches to pain relief. Let's look at their differences and indications. Each method has its own characteristics and is used depending on the situation.

Differences between general anesthesia and sedation

CriterionGeneral anesthesiaSedation
ConsciousnessFully unconsciousPreserved

Who each method is suitable for

General anesthesia is indicated for complex extractions, when a lengthy procedure is expected, or for patients with a panic fear. Sedation is suitable for those who feel anxious but want to remain conscious. The choice of method depends on the clinical picture and health status. The doctor assesses the scope of the intervention, allergic reactions, and chronic diseases. For example, removing a wisdom tooth with a gum incision may require general anesthesia, while a simple extraction only needs sedation. Sedation is also convenient for people with a gag reflex. The cost of treating a dental abscess depends on the complexity and the chosen pain relief. The final decision is made by the anesthesiologist after an examination, taking into account all factors and the patient's wishes, to ensure comfort and safety during the procedure.

Tooth extraction with a cyst

A cyst at the root of a tooth often becomes a reason for extraction. The surgery has its own specifics that you should know about in advance. Understanding the process helps you prepare and reduces anxiety.

Specifics of surgery for a cyst

When a cyst reaches a significant size or destroys the surrounding bone tissue, saving the tooth is not always possible. In that case, removal is not just an extraction but a thorough curettage of the pathological tissues. The surgeon works carefully so as not to leave fragments of the cyst lining, otherwise the inflammation may return. The surgery requires good visualization, so a microscope with 25× magnification is often used, which allows the smallest details to be seen. After removal, the socket is treated with antiseptic solutions and, if necessary, filled with osteoplastic material to restore the bone. The cost of removing a tooth with a cyst depends on the complexity of the case and the chosen technique; the final amount is given after examination and diagnostics. The doctor explains the treatment plan in detail and answers questions so that you understand each stage.

Stages of extraction with a cyst

  1. Diagnosis: an X-ray or cone-beam CT scan is taken to assess the size and location of the cyst.
  2. Anesthesia: local anesthesia is used; in complex cases, sedation may be an option.
  3. Access: the surgeon peels back the gum to gain access to the root and cyst.
  4. Removal: the tooth is extracted, and the cyst is curetted along with its lining, leaving no fragments behind.
  5. Treatment: the socket is rinsed with an antiseptic, and bone grafting material is placed if necessary.
  6. Completion: sutures are placed, and aftercare instructions for the socket are given.

Laser tooth extraction

In dentistry, a laser is used to cut tissues and coagulate blood vessels. The surgery involves less bleeding than when a scalpel is used. The method is not suitable for all cases.

How a laser differs from a scalpel

CriterionLaserScalpel
Effect on tissueLight beamMechanical blade
BleedingMinimalPossible
PainLessMore pronounced

PrecisionHighDepends on the surgeon

When a laser is used

Laser tooth extraction is indicated in complex clinical cases, such as impacted wisdom teeth or cysts, where careful tissue excision is required. The method is also chosen by patients with increased sensitivity or a tendency to bleed. However, in cases of deep inflammation or when large bone fragments need to be removed, the surgeon may prefer traditional instruments. The decision is always made by the doctor after examination and review of imaging. The cost of the procedure depends on complexity: the price of treating a dental abscess is determined individually, as is the price of extraction. The laser does not completely replace the scalpel but complements the surgeon's arsenal. The doctor weighs all the pros and cons to choose the optimal approach for each specific case.

Treating a dental abscess: main steps

A dental abscess is a purulent inflammation of the periosteum. It requires urgent intervention. Without treatment, the infection spreads to surrounding tissues and can lead to sepsis.

Causes and symptoms of a dental abscess

  • Causes: untreated tooth decay, pulpitis, dental trauma, failed root canal treatment, inflammation of a periodontal pocket.
  • Symptoms: severe throbbing pain radiating to the ear or temple, swelling of the cheek and gum, fever, general weakness.
  • Difference from other conditions: with a dental abscess, the swelling increases rapidly within a few hours, and the pain is not relieved by ordinary painkillers.
  • Diagnosis: the dentist examines the oral cavity and takes an X-ray to assess the condition of the roots and surrounding bone.
  • Complications: without treatment, pus can break into the soft tissues, causing an abscess or phlegmon — a life-threatening condition.

Treatment methods for a dental abscess

Treatment of a dental abscess aims to remove the pus and eliminate the cause. First, the doctor incises the mucosa and periosteum to ensure drainage of the pus. Then the wound is treated with an antiseptic and antibiotics are prescribed. If the tooth can be saved, the doctor performs root canal treatment and places a filling. If the damage is extensive, the tooth is removed. The cost of treating a dental abscess depends on the clinical picture, the complexity of the intervention, and the chosen method of anesthesia. Our clinic has a cone-beam CT scanner, which helps accurately assess the condition of the tissues and plan the surgery. After the acute inflammation subsides, physiotherapy and rinses are prescribed. The decision to preserve the tooth is made by the doctor based on the extent of damage and the condition of the roots. Each case is considered individually to choose the most gentle method.

Equipment for tooth extraction

The technical equipment of the office determines the precision and safety of the intervention. Let's look at what instruments and devices are used for tooth extraction and how diagnostics affect the course of the operation.

Basic surgical instruments

  • Forceps: designed to grip the crown of the tooth; different shapes are suitable for incisors, canines, premolars, and molars.
  • Elevators: work as a lever, breaking the ligament that holds the root in the socket; used for complex roots.
  • Luxators: thin instruments with a pointed tip that gently separate the periodontal ligament and widen the socket.
  • Curettes: used to scrape the socket after extraction to remove granulation tissue and tissue remnants.
  • Periosteal elevators: peel the gum away from the bone in complex cases, providing access to the root.

Modern diagnostics before extraction

Before the operation, the doctor assesses the position of the roots and their relationship to anatomical structures. Cone-beam CT provides a three-dimensional image of the jaw with accuracy down to fractions of a millimeter. This helps identify root curvatures, their number, and proximity to the mandibular canal or maxillary sinus. Based on the CT scan, the surgeon chooses the technique: simple extraction or complex extraction with a gum incision. Some clinics use an intraoral scanner, which creates a digital model of the dental arch, which may be needed when planning implantation. However, for the operation itself, the CT scanner is what matters most. The scan helps avoid nerve damage and sinus perforation. Without such an examination, the doctor acts blindly, relying on experience and a two-dimensional image. The modern approach is extraction planned in advance, taking into account all individual characteristics.

Who performs tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction is a surgical procedure. It is performed by an oral surgeon. But other specialists are also involved in the process. Let's look at their roles so you know who is responsible for what.

The role of the oral surgeon

The oral surgeon is the key figure. They assess the clinical picture, review the imaging, and plan the course of the operation. Their task is to extract the tooth atraumatatically while preserving the surrounding tissues. The doctor decides which method to use: simple extraction or complex extraction with root separation. They also treat the socket with antiseptics and, if necessary, place sutures. The smoothness of the intervention and recovery depends on their experience. The surgeon also gives recommendations for post-procedure care. In the clinic, such a specialist sees patients daily. In complex cases, for example when removing a wisdom tooth with curved roots, they may use additional instruments and techniques. It is important that the patient feels calm and trusts the doctor, so the surgeon explains each stage in detail.

The role of the anesthesiologist and assistant

  • Anesthesiologist: administers local anesthesia or sedation and monitors the patient's condition during the procedure.
  • Assistant: passes instruments, assists the surgeon, maintains sterility, and holds the retractor.
  • Nurse: prepares the room, sterilizes instruments, keeps records, and assists with patient care.

Key points

Key points

Tooth extraction is a surgical procedure after which the body needs time to recover. The outcome depends on the complexity of the intervention, the condition of the tissues, and how closely the patient follows the doctor's recommendations. During the first 24 hours after the procedure, a blood clot forms that protects the socket from infection. It should not be rinsed, touched with the tongue, or removed. Swelling and moderate pain are normal reactions and are managed with cold compresses and painkillers prescribed by the doctor. Within a few days, the discomfort subsides, and complete healing takes from two weeks to several months depending on the extent of the intervention. During this period, it is important to protect the extraction site, avoid hard and hot foods, avoid overheating, and refrain from heavy physical exertion.

When to see a dentist

After tooth extraction, there are conditions that require an unscheduled visit to the dentist. If the pain intensifies on the third or fourth day instead of subsiding, if swelling appears and keeps growing, if the temperature rises above 38 degrees, or if there is an unpleasant odor or purulent discharge from the socket, these are signs of inflammation, such as alveolitis. Bleeding that does not stop within a few hours is also a reason for an urgent visit. Numbness that does not go away for more than a day, or a feeling that a fragment remains in the socket, is another warning sign. In such cases, the doctor will examine the intervention area, take an X-ray if necessary, and prescribe treatment. Delay can lead to complications, so it is better to see a specialist than to wait for it to resolve on its own.

Questions about tooth extraction in Almaty

Tooth extraction starts at 18,000 ₸ according to the clinic's price list. The cost of treating a dental abscess depends on the complexity of the case: whether the pus needs to be drained, whether the causative tooth needs to be removed, and whether additional treatment is required. The price is determined after examination and diagnostics, including an X-ray. The exact amount will be given by the doctor during the consultation, and you can view approximate prices in the pricing section on this page. Do not attempt self-treatment: an abscess is dangerous because the infection can spread.

The cost of tooth extraction depends on the complexity: simple extraction, wisdom tooth removal, complex extraction with an incision, etc. The exact price can be determined after an examination, as the doctor assesses the condition of the tooth and the need for additional procedures. Approximate prices are listed in the price list on this page. The cost usually includes anesthesia, and for complex extraction, suturing.

Tooth extraction during pregnancy is possible, but only with strict indications and usually in the second trimester (from week 14 to week 27), when the risk to the fetus is minimal. In the first and third trimesters, doctors try to avoid surgical interventions unless there is an urgent need (for example, purulent inflammation). The decision is made by an oral surgeon together with an obstetrician-gynecologist, using safe anesthetics without adrenaline. After extraction, it is important to follow all the doctor's recommendations to prevent complications.

Mild pain and swelling after tooth extraction are normal reactions of the body that usually subside within 2–3 days. To ease the condition, you can apply cold to the cheek during the first hours, take painkillers prescribed by the doctor, and avoid rinsing your mouth during the first 24 hours. If the pain intensifies, does not subside for more than 3 days, is accompanied by fever or an unpleasant odor, you should urgently consult a dentist — this may be a sign of alveolitis (inflammation of the socket). The doctor will perform an examination and prescribe treatment.

A dental abscess (periostitis) is a purulent inflammation of the periosteum that occurs as a complication of caries or pulpitis. Treatment usually includes incising the abscess, removing the nerve or the tooth, prescribing antibiotics, and physical therapy. At our clinic, treatment is performed using a laser and a microscope, which increases precision and reduces the risk of complications. After the acute inflammation is resolved, the doctor decides whether to restore the tooth or place an implant.

Wisdom tooth removal is performed under local anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. The doctor may use sedation for patients with increased anxiety. After the surgery, some soreness is possible, which is relieved with painkillers. The complexity of the removal depends on the position of the tooth, so a cone-beam CT scan is always taken before the procedure for accurate planning.

Tooth extraction begins with an examination and X-ray diagnostics, after which the doctor selects the anesthesia. The procedure itself takes from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity. Modern equipment, including a laser and a microscope, allows the extraction to be performed atraumatically, which speeds up healing. After the extraction, the doctor gives recommendations on caring for the socket and, if necessary, prescribes medications.

The decision to extract or treat is made by the doctor after diagnostics. If the tooth can be saved, the doctor will suggest therapy, for example, root canal treatment under a microscope. Extraction is indicated in cases of severe crown destruction, the impossibility of endodontic treatment, or severe inflammation. The doctor always tries to preserve the tooth, but if this is impossible, they will suggest extraction followed by implantation.

With purulent inflammation (for example, with a dental abscess), tooth extraction may be necessary to eliminate the source of infection. However, in some cases, the abscess is first opened and antibacterial therapy is administered, while the extraction is postponed. The decision is made by the surgeon after examination and assessment of the condition. Our clinic has the ability to perform the procedure using a laser, which reduces the risk of complications.

Before tooth extraction, you need to consult with a doctor, have an X-ray taken, and inform them about all medications you are taking and any chronic conditions. On the day of the surgery, you must not eat for 2–3 hours if general anesthesia is planned. The doctor will give recommendations on aftercare. In our clinic, a CT scan is performed before a complex extraction for accurate planning.

I had my wisdom tooth removed; it was lying horizontally, and the socket healed smoothly. It healed within a week, there was no dry socket, nothing to complain about (my family laughed about it afterwards at home).

I had to have the tooth removed — it couldn't be saved. They sent the aftercare instructions via messenger, it healed within a week, and there was no dry socket. I'll come back for a professional cleaning. They scheduled me at a convenient time, no "come at nine and wait." The contract and receipt were provided without me having to ask — that's a whole separate story. Not painful at all. Sterility is visible, instruments were opened in front of me, which I'd never seen anywhere before. They gave me aftercare instructions and the doctor's phone number in case of questions, the way it should be. The administrator called back when she promised, just as we agreed. They answered my questions even after the appointment, via messenger — thanks for that too. What won me over was that they didn't push anything unnecessary. They called the next day to ask about swelling.
