Dental X-rays in Almaty: types of images, indications and how diagnostics is performed

Dental X-rays in Almaty are a basic examination of the hard tissues of the tooth, the roots, and the surrounding bone. A periapical image covers one tooth or a pair of adjacent teeth, a panoramic image covers both jaws, and computed tomography provides a three-dimensional image. The indications are determined by the doctor based on your complaints and examination. Pregnancy is a reason to inform the doctor before the procedure.

What dental X-rays in Almaty show

Inflammation at the root apex

On a dental X-ray, a shadow at the root apex is visible — it occurs with periodontitis and cysts. The image is used to assess the size of the lesion and its relationship to adjacent teeth and the canal. The doctor then decides whether root canal treatment or monitoring is needed.

Hidden caries and the condition of the canals

A dental X-ray in Almaty helps to detect caries on the contact surface between teeth that is not visible to the eye, and to check how completely the canals have been filled. This affects the treatment plan: sometimes a filling is enough, and sometimes the canal needs to be retreated.

Where to get an X-ray: clinics and offices?

Dental X-rays in Almaty are taken in various places: public polyclinics, private centers, and standalone offices. The choice depends on the task, the doctor's referral, and how urgently the result is needed.

Which facilities perform X-rays

  • Public clinics: for patients registered there, X-rays are often taken with a referral, but appointments can be slow and the queue is a live one.
  • Private dental practices: periapical and panoramic X-rays are done on site, usually on the day of your visit, if the machine is free and you have a referral.
  • Standalone X-ray rooms: accept patients with or without an appointment, provide the image on a disc or film, and a radiologist writes the report.
  • Multidisciplinary centers: these have both X-ray and CT; the cost of a CT scan depends on the area and the number of projections, so it is confirmed before the procedure.
  • Hospitals and maxillofacial departments: patients are referred here for trauma, a complex cyst, or before surgery; the X-ray is part of the overall examination plan.

What to check before booking

  • Referral: bring it with you — it specifies the area and view your doctor requested; without the paperwork, the office may take the wrong image.
  • How it's provided: ask in advance whether you'll get the image on a disk, on film, or as a file; for implants and orthodontics, a digital file is usually required.
  • Appointments and wait times: at a public clinic the queue can take a day, at a private one it depends on how busy the machine is; check by phone.
  • What to wear: remove jewelry, necklaces, and hair clips around the head area; metal creates artifacts and makes the image hard to read.
  • Pregnancy: tell them before the procedure — the doctor will decide whether the image can be taken now or should wait; that's their decision, not yours.

X-ray by doctor's referral

If your treating doctor has already set a specific task, go where that exact task can be done. A periapical X-ray of a single tooth and a panoramic X-ray are performed at most dental clinics. For implantation, orthodontics, or complex anatomy, a cone-beam CT scanner is needed — not every office has one. The cost of a wisdom tooth X-ray depends on whether it is a periapical image or a zone within a CT scan, and it is quoted before the procedure. A referral does not replace an examination: an X-ray is a supplement to it, not a standalone test. If the X-ray is taken elsewhere, collect the file or film and show it to the doctor who referred you. Check the file format in advance: not every program can open someone else's disc, and a printout loses some information when printed. Keep the X-ray with you — on a repeat visit it will save time and money if the study is still within its validity period.

Why a wisdom tooth X-ray is needed before extraction

The X-ray shows what cannot be seen in the mouth: the angle of the roots, bone thickness, and proximity to the canal. Without it, the surgeon works blind. A panoramic X-ray gives an overview, while a periapical X-ray shows the details of a specific tooth.

What the X-ray shows before extraction

  • Number and shape of roots: a wisdom tooth may have three or four roots, curved or fused — this cannot be determined by touch, yet surgical planning depends on the exact picture.
  • Angulation and position: the tooth lies horizontally, is impacted against the second molar, or is tilted toward the cheek. Imaging clarifies which approach to choose.
  • Bone thickness around the tooth: a thin socket wall or a thinned cortical layer changes the course of the procedure, and this can only be seen on imaging.
  • Condition of the adjacent tooth: root resorption of the second molar, caries on its distal surface — these are visible on imaging and are taken into account before treatment begins.
  • Signs of inflammation: a cyst, granuloma, or widening of the periodontal ligament space around the apex — for the surgeon, diagnostic accuracy matters more here than the cost of the examination.

How the position of the tooth germ is assessed

The bud of the wisdom tooth forms in the jawbone long before it erupts. From the X-ray, the doctor assesses the stage of root formation, the direction in which the tooth is growing, and whether there is enough space for it in the dental arch. In teenagers, the roots are not yet closed, and this changes the approach: sometimes it is reasonable to wait, sometimes to extract earlier. In adults, the picture is different: the roots are fully formed and the bone around them is denser. The assessment is based on several signs at once — the angle of inclination, the depth of the tooth, and its relationship to neighboring roots. No single one of them determines the outcome on its own. The doctor decides by correlating the X-ray with the oral examination and the patient's complaints. If the bud is located high and does not press on neighboring teeth, sometimes observation is enough. If it grows toward the second molar or into the canal, extraction is planned. Patients often ask about the cost of the X-ray, but for the surgeon, the informativeness of the image matters more.

Relationship to the mandibular canal

The mandibular nerve canal runs through the lower jaw. It carries sensation to the lip, chin, and gum. The roots of the wisdom tooth sometimes lie right next to the canal or cross it. On a regular periapical X-ray, this is a two-dimensional image, and it is difficult to assess the true distance from it. Cone-beam computed tomography provides a three-dimensional image and makes it possible to see exactly how the roots and the canal relate to each other. If a root encircles the nerve, the risk of damage during extraction is higher. In that case, the surgeon chooses a different technique: sections the tooth into parts, works more carefully, and sometimes refers the patient for additional diagnostics. It is impossible to predict in advance how the nerve will behave — this depends on the clinical picture. But it is possible to see the dangerous proximity before surgery, and imaging is the main tool here.

When an X-ray is not enough

A periapical X-ray shows the tooth in a single projection. If the roots intertwine with the canal, lie in several planes, or there is a cyst nearby, the information may not be sufficient. In that case, cone-beam computed tomography is prescribed. It provides a layered image and makes it possible to measure the distance to the nerve in millimeters, see the course of the roots in three dimensions, and assess the condition of the surrounding bone. This does not mean that a CT scan is always needed. For a typical wisdom tooth with straight roots, a regular X-ray is enough. The decision is made by the doctor based on the clinical picture. Sometimes it is enough to repeat the X-ray in a different position, sometimes to refer the patient for a CT scan right away. It is not worth refusing additional diagnostics: the cost of a mistake during extraction is higher than the cost of the examination. If you have doubts, ask the surgeon exactly what he wants to see on the image, and pass the question on to the radiologist.

How to prepare for a dental CT scan

A computed tomography scan of the teeth requires simple preparation. There are few special restrictions, but a few points should be considered in advance. They will be discussed below.

What to remove before the procedure

  • Metal jewelry: earrings, necklaces, and piercings in the head and neck area must be removed — metal causes artifacts on the image, making part of it unreadable.
  • Removable dentures: if the appliance can be taken out, remove it before positioning; fixed crowns and implants stay in place, as they do not interfere with diagnosis.
  • Glasses and hearing aids: remove them so that frames and electronics do not block the area of interest; however, tell the doctor if you have trouble hearing instructions without your hearing aid.
  • Hairpins and hair ties: remove metal clips and bobby pins; it is best to tie your hair up or let it down so that it does not fall into the scanning field.

What to tell the doctor in advance

  • Pregnancy: tell us right away, even if it's early; the decision about the X-ray is made by the doctor, and sometimes the scan is postponed or a different diagnostic method is chosen.
  • Allergies and medications: mention any reactions to drugs and any medications you take regularly — this affects the choice of approach if a procedure is planned based on the scan.
  • Surgeries and injuries: past procedures in the jaw area, fractures, installed plates and screws — all of this changes what appears on the scan and how the data is interpreted.
  • Chronic conditions: thyroid problems, a history of cancer, diabetes — this information helps the doctor assess risks and choose the scanning mode.
  • Previous scans: bring discs or files from past studies if you have them; comparing changes over time is more informative than a single new scan.

How the examination is performed

The patient sits or stands at the machine, and the head is fixed with a headrest and a chin support. The cone-beam CT scanner rotates around the head, and the scan is completed within a few seconds. The jaw must be held still the entire time: movement blurs the image, and the scan has to be repeated. You can breathe normally, but swallowing is undesirable. There should be nothing in the mouth: no water, no crumbs, no chewing gum. If the lower jaw is being examined, the tongue is pressed against the palate so as not to block the area of interest. The result is a three-dimensional model: it is viewed on a screen, the bone is measured, and the canals and sinuses are assessed. A printout or file is given to the patient, usually on the same day. No preparation such as fasting or stopping medications is required. After the procedure, you can immediately return to your usual activities; there are no restrictions. If you feel unwell or panic during the scan, tell the doctor — the examination is stopped.

Protection of the body and thyroid gland

The radiation dose from cone beam computed tomography is lower than from conventional spiral CT, but it is not eliminated entirely. The thyroid gland and the lenses of the eyes are sensitive to radiation, so they are shielded when the equipment allows. A collar is placed on the neck and a lead apron on the chest. Sometimes shielding is not used: it blocks the area of interest and the image becomes meaningless. In that case, the doctor explains why and decides on an individual basis. For pregnant patients, the examination is ordered only for urgent indications, when the benefits outweigh the risks. For children, reduced settings are selected, and parents are asked to hold the child or stay nearby. Repeat scanning without need is not advisable: each exposure to the machine adds dose. How many times an image can be taken is determined by the doctor based on the clinical picture, not on a fixed schedule. If you have doubts, ask questions before the procedure, not after.

Does the clinic have on-site X-ray and CT?

Imaging equipment may be in the office itself or may be elsewhere. The difference is not visible in the service description, but in how the appointment is organized.

What on-site diagnostics means

On-site diagnostics means that the machine is in the same building where the doctor sees patients. The patient is not sent to another medical facility and is not asked to bring the image on a disc. The doctor selects the projection, views the result on the screen, and if necessary takes an additional image immediately. For complex cases this is convenient: while the person is sitting in the chair, the picture is already assembled. A cone beam CT scanner provides a three-dimensional image of the jaw, which is used to assess the position of roots, canals, and the mandibular nerve. A periapical X-ray is needed for one area, while a volumetric scan is used when the overall picture matters. Jaw X-rays in Almaty are also done in standalone offices, but then the patient's route is longer: first the image, then return to the clinic. Having a CT scanner does not eliminate referral to another laboratory if the specific type of examination needed is not available here. The doctor decides based on the clinical picture.

How this affects the appointment

When the equipment is nearby, the appointment proceeds differently. The doctor gets the image during the same visit and does not postpone the decision until next time. The treatment plan is discussed immediately, while the person remembers the details of the conversation. If something changes during the procedure, a follow-up image can be taken without a new appointment or travel. This is especially noticeable in root canal treatment and implant placement, where positional accuracy is important. Another advantage is continuity: the image remains in the clinic's database and is referred to in subsequent stages. If diagnostics are done elsewhere, a pause appears between the image and treatment. Sometimes it does not matter, sometimes it delays the start. The cost of CT here is irrelevant: what matters more is how much time the route itself takes. It depends on the clinical picture and on how urgently treatment needs to begin.

What to clarify by phone

  • What equipment is available: ask directly whether they do periapical X-rays and 3D imaging in the same building, rather than at a branch across town.
  • Do you need an appointment: check whether they take X-rays on a walk-in basis or ask you to come at a separate time, and whether it coincides with your doctor's appointment.
  • Format of the result: find out whether they give you the scan in hand, on a disc, or only describe it on site, and whether it will go into your chart.
  • Who interprets it: check whether the scan is read by your treating doctor or a separate radiologist, and when the report will be ready.
  • What to bring: ask about previous scans and reports — sometimes they replace a new study or help compare changes over time.
  • Limitations: tell them about pregnancy, implants in the head, and any inability to lie still for a long time — this changes the choice of method.

If the clinic does not have the equipment

This happens, and it is not a sign of a bad clinic. Small offices often do not keep a CT scanner: the equipment is expensive, and patient flow does not always justify it. In that case, the doctor refers to a diagnostic center and asks to bring the result. The route becomes longer: one visit for the image, another for treatment. Sometimes the image is taken the same day, sometimes you have to wait for an appointment. To avoid losing time, it is worth asking in advance where exactly you will be referred and how quickly they see patients there. The second option is to bring a recent image from another place, if it was taken recently and covers the right area. Whether an outside image is suitable is decided by the doctor: its recency, quality, and whether the needed area is included in the image matter. Bringing old films without a report is of little use. If the image was taken long ago or the area is wrong, the examination will be repeated.

What equipment is used for diagnostics?

Diagnostics in dentistry relies on several devices. Each solves its own task: from a pinpoint image of a single tooth to a three-dimensional picture of the entire jaw.

Periapical machine and sensor

A periapical dental X-ray is taken using a small unit with a tube mounted on a movable arm. The patient sits still, the head is stabilized, and a sensor is placed inside the mouth. It is a flat matrix that captures the radiation and transmits the image to the screen instantly. Film is a thing of the past: the result appears within seconds, and retakes due to exposure errors are rarely needed. The unit shows one or two adjacent teeth and the surrounding bone. That is enough to detect interproximal caries, assess root canal status, and evaluate bone tissue around the root apex. Such an image provides no depth: the root is seen in a single projection, and some details may be obscured by overlapping structures. If another angle is needed, the dentist takes a second image from a different direction. The radiation dose is low, but each image is a separate exposure, so a series is not ordered unnecessarily. The dentist decides how many projections are needed in each case.

Panoramic unit

A panoramic radiograph, or orthopantomogram, shows both jaws in full on a single image. The unit works differently: the tube and detector move around the head along an arc while the patient stands still and bites on a positioning plate. Within a few seconds, a full scan of the entire dental arch is obtained: developing teeth, impacted and supernumerary teeth, maxillary sinuses, temporomandibular joints, and overall bone level are visible. The panoramic image is useful for initial assessment: an orthodontist can see the position of all teeth, and a surgeon can see the location of wisdom teeth and the mandibular canal. Since it is a single plane, fine details such as canal width or cortical plate thickness cannot be measured from this image. If a suspicious area is found on the panoramic image, it is clarified using other methods. The image is taken for both adults and children — the unit adjusts to the patient's height.

Cone beam computed tomography

Cone beam computed tomography produces a three-dimensional image: scanning is performed in a circle, and the computer assembles a 3D model from the slices. The dentist rotates it on the screen, viewing the jaw from any projection and layer by layer. Bone thickness, the course of the mandibular canal, the condition of the maxillary sinuses, and the position of roots relative to adjacent structures are visible. This level of detail is needed before implantation, complex extractions, and endodontic treatment with anatomical variations. The patient stands or sits, scanning takes less than a minute, and head movement during it distorts the image. A 3D scan does not replace a periapical image: for routine caries checks, it is excessive. What exactly to order is decided by the dentist based on the clinical picture. Radiation exposure is higher than with film imaging, so tomography is not performed without indications.

What to remember

The dentist orders the image

An X-ray is not a standalone procedure but an order. The dentist decides whether a periapical image, panoramic image, or CT scan is needed, and which area to examine. Without this, the image becomes a picture without a question. The scope of diagnostics depends on the clinical picture. Before removing a wisdom tooth, the position of the roots and their proximity to the mandibular canal and adjacent teeth are assessed. If the root is curved or lies near a nerve, a more detailed scan is needed. Sometimes a periapical image is sufficient, sometimes cone beam computed tomography is required. The dentist decides. The patient can ask why the image was ordered, what is being looked for, and how it will affect the plan. This is a reasonable question, and a clear answer should be provided. Requesting an image "just in case" makes little sense: unnecessary radiation without a clinical purpose adds nothing. Conversely, refusing diagnostics and proceeding blindly increases the risk of complications during extraction. The dentist correlates the complaints, examination findings, and imaging data, and only then chooses the approach.

Repeat images when indicated

A repeat scan is done not on a schedule, but for a specific reason. The reasons vary. Follow-up after a complex extraction, if there are doubts about healing. Checking the position of an instrument or implant. Suspicion of inflammation that is not visible clinically. If the dynamics are unclear, the doctor may order a repeat CT scan after some time. The intervals and frequency are determined by the doctor; there is no universal schedule. One should not accumulate scans unnecessarily or refuse them when they are needed. It is useful for the patient to keep their scans in electronic form: when moving to another clinic or another specialist, they can be shown, and then part of the diagnostics will not have to be repeated. This saves time and reduces the overall burden. If a scan was taken recently and reflects the current situation, a new one may not be needed — but this too is decided by the doctor, not by the patient at will.

Interpretation requires preparation

An image is data, not a ready-made diagnosis. Reading it requires knowledge of anatomy, an understanding of what is normal, and experience correlating it with the clinical picture. The doctor does not look only at the tooth that brought the patient in. Adjacent teeth, the sinuses, the mandibular canal, and the condition of the bone tissue all come into view. Sometimes an image reveals changes the person had no idea about. This is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to discuss with the doctor what it means and whether further tests are needed. A patient should not try to interpret the image on their own using a picture from the internet: context and projection change the picture. It is best to ask the doctor directly: what is visible, what it means, and what the options are going forward. A clear answer to these three questions is a sign of a healthy dialogue. If anything remains unclear, it is worth asking again before treatment begins, not after.

Pregnancy and protection

Pregnancy is not an absolute contraindication to diagnostic imaging, but it is a reason for caution. The decision is made by the doctor, and most often the X-ray is postponed if the situation allows waiting. When a diagnosis cannot be made and safe management cannot be chosen without an X-ray, the doctor weighs the benefits and risks. If necessary, protection is used: a lead apron, shielding, and a minimal exposure setting. The patient is asked to report pregnancy and gestational age before the procedure, not after. This affects the choice of method and the scope of the examination. Breastfeeding women should also inform the doctor: he will decide whether breastfeeding needs to be interrupted and how. For elective diagnostics, it is better to choose a time after consulting with the attending physician. If an X-ray has already been taken and it turns out that pregnancy is possible, there is no need to panic: inform the specialist, and he will assess the situation. There are no universal rules for all cases; each is decided by the doctor based on the clinical picture.

Questions about dental X-rays in Almaty

The cost of a dental X-ray in Almaty depends on the type of image: a periapical X-ray of a single tooth costs less than a panoramic survey image or computed tomography of the jaw. The price is quoted by the doctor during the examination, once it is clear which examination is needed for the diagnosis, and you can see the current prices in the price section on this page. The initial examination and treatment plan at our clinic are 0 ₸.

Yes, an X-ray of all teeth can be taken at once with a panoramic image or computed tomography: the machine rotates around the head, and the image shows both jaws, the roots, and the sinuses. The procedure takes a few minutes, and the patient stands or sits still. Such a survey image is usually needed before implantation, orthodontic treatment, or wisdom tooth extraction.

The price of a dental X-ray includes the work of the X-ray technician, the image itself, and its interpretation by the doctor, and for computed tomography it also includes processing the three-dimensional data on a cone-beam CT scanner. You usually do not need to pay separately for film or recording to a disc, but check this before the procedure. The final amount for the examination is quoted by the doctor during the examination, and the price list is published in the price section.

An X-ray before dental treatment is needed almost always: without an image, the doctor cannot see how the roots and canals are positioned or whether there is inflammation beyond the apex. The X-ray is taken before treatment begins and then repeated for monitoring, for example after root canal filling. If you recently had an X-ray at another clinic, bring it with you — sometimes a repeat examination is not required.

A dental X-ray in early pregnancy is taken only for urgent indications, when a diagnosis and treatment choice cannot be made without an image. Pregnancy itself is not a contraindication, but you must inform the doctor about it before the procedure: the abdomen and neck are covered with a protective apron, and the examination is performed on a machine with a narrow radiation beam. If the case is not acute, the X-ray is often postponed until the second trimester.

Dental X-rays are safe for your health and can be taken as often as needed for diagnosis and monitoring of treatment: there is no strict annual limit, but every image must be justified. A periapical X-ray of a single tooth delivers a minimal dose, while a CT scan delivers a higher dose, so it is ordered when clinically indicated rather than for routine screening. If you are being treated by several doctors, let them know so that images are not duplicated.

Yes, you can book an X-ray on weekends or in the evening: the clinic is open daily from 9:00 to 20:00, so you can have an image taken after work or on Saturday or Sunday. It is best to call ahead and check available times to avoid waiting in line. If your treating doctor ordered the X-ray, bring the referral or tell us which tooth is bothering you.

Yes, the clinic has free parking, so you can leave your car nearby during your appointment and X-ray. If the parking lot is full, call +7 747 093 89 86 and the administrator will tell you where to park.

A periapical X-ray shows one or two teeth and their roots in a single plane, while a CT scan provides a three-dimensional image of the jaw, sinuses, and canals. CT is ordered when it is necessary to assess the position of a nerve, bone thickness before implantation, or to locate a hidden source of inflammation. A periapical X-ray is faster and delivers a lower dose, so it is often sufficient for treating cavities.

Yes, an X-ray is mandatory before wisdom tooth extraction: it shows the angle, number, and shape of the roots, and their proximity to the inferior alveolar canal and maxillary sinus. The surgeon uses it to plan the procedure and decide whether a CT scan is needed for precise assessment. The cost of such an X-ray depends on the type of examination, and the exact amount is given by the doctor during the consultation.

Came in for a consultation, stayed for treatment, no unnecessary visits. Happy with the result. I booked my family here too. The hallway doesn't smell like a hospital, but something neutral — I'll note that separately. The treatment plan was laid out by stages and by cost, just as agreed.

Came in for a consultation, ended up getting treatment, everything went according to plan, and it didn't hurt at all. Everything is fine now. I have nothing to compare it to, but it felt like everything was done right (I couldn't believe it myself)!

I thought it would take longer. They did what was planned, without anything unnecessary. Rustam laid out the plan in detail. My previous experience was worse, so I have something to compare it to!
