Tooth Extraction During Pregnancy in Almaty: Safety, Timing, Specifics

During pregnancy, teeth are extracted on an emergency basis: severe pain, purulent infection, or a destroyed crown. Routine dental treatment is performed in the second trimester. X-rays are taken with a protective apron if the root cannot be assessed without an image. The decision is made jointly by the dentist and the obstetrician-gynecologist, taking into account the stage of pregnancy and the woman's condition.

What determines the cost

The cost of the procedure is determined by its complexity: the location of the tooth, the condition of the roots and surrounding tissues, and the need for surgical access. Anesthesia and follow-up monitoring are calculated separately. The exact amount is given after an examination and X-ray at the initial appointment. It is impossible to answer in advance, without diagnostics, how much it costs to extract a tooth in Almaty: the price differs for a simple and an impacted tooth. Call or book a consultation to get an estimate for your situation.

Stages of tooth extraction

Step 01

Consultation and examination

The doctor takes a medical history, clarifies the stage of pregnancy and medications being taken, and examines the oral cavity. An X-ray is ordered if necessary.

Preparation: the assistant lays out sterile instruments, the dentist puts on gloves — illustration for the "Anesthesia" section
Step 02

Preparation

The scope of the intervention and pain management are discussed. If needed, a referral is made for consultation with the doctor monitoring the pregnancy. Tests are ordered as indicated.

Step 03

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered with a medication approved during pregnancy. The doctor verifies that the anesthesia is sufficient and only then begins the procedure.

Follow-up visit: the dentist checks the result with a mirror while the assistant holds the saliva ejector — illustration for the section "Post-treatment follow-up"
Step 04

Extraction

The doctor separates the tissues around the tooth, applies forceps or performs surgical access for an impacted tooth, removes it, and examines the socket.

End of appointment: the doctor sits with the patient to go over aftercare instructions — illustration for the "Follow-up until healing" section
Step 05

Completion of the appointment

The socket is treated and sutures are placed if necessary. The doctor gives care recommendations and schedules a follow-up examination. If complaints arise after the procedure, you should contact the clinic.

X-ray before the procedure: is it necessary and how is it done?

An image before tooth extraction is not a formality. It shows what cannot be seen in the mouth: the angle of the roots, the septa, and proximity to the nerve. Without it, the surgeon works blindly.

When an image is mandatory

An X-ray before tooth extraction is taken almost always. The reason is simple: the root may be curved, lie close to the mandibular canal, or be near the maxillary sinus. Sometimes there are extra roots that the patient does not know about. All of this is visible only on the image. If the crown is destroyed and the root goes into the bone at an angle, the doctor must understand where to direct the force. A separate situation is impacted teeth that have not erupted. Here a periapical image is not enough; a three-dimensional picture is needed. Cone-beam computed tomography provides a three-dimensional image and shows the position of the tooth in the jaw. During pregnancy, radiation diagnostics are planned with particular care. The cost of the image is usually included in the overall treatment plan, and this is clarified at the appointment. The decision on whether the study is necessary is made by the doctor based on the clinical picture.

Protective measures during the examination

  • Apron and collar: lead shields cover the chest, abdomen, and neck if the X-ray is taken during pregnancy; protection is mandatory at any stage.
  • Film and sensor: with a periapical X-ray, the dose is minimal, and a modern digital sensor captures the image in fractions of a second, so exposure is brief.
  • Planning: if a woman is expecting a baby, the examination is postponed whenever possible, or the gentlest option is chosen — the doctor decides.
  • One image instead of a series: for an extraction, a single periapical X-ray is usually sufficient; a series is done only when indicated, to avoid increasing the load.

Alternatives to radiation diagnostics

There is no complete substitute for an X-ray. Examination and probing provide some information, but they do not show the root within the bone. An intraoral scanner captures the surface of the crown and soft tissues; it is useful for prosthodontics, but not for assessing roots. Ultrasound in dentistry is used to a limited extent. Sometimes the doctor may postpone extraction until radiation diagnostics becomes acceptable. Cutting corners on diagnostics costs more when the root extends into the sinus or fractures. During pregnancy, the choice of method is coordinated with the obstetrician-gynecologist. In some cases, an image taken before pregnancy is sufficient, if it is recent and reflects the current condition of the tooth. The final decision remains with the doctor. Refusing an X-ray out of fear is an understandable position, but without an image of the root the surgeon operates blindly. Then there is a higher risk that a fragment will remain in the socket and the inflammation will return.

Wisdom teeth: why they are more difficult and what the risks are

Third molars form later than the rest and often find no place in the dental arch. Hence impaction, tilting, pressure on neighboring teeth. Let us examine exactly what makes them difficult and when surgery is postponed.

Anatomical features of third molars

Wisdom teeth erupt last, when the arch has already formed. There is often no room left for them, and the tooth remains in the jaw or emerges at an angle. The roots of such teeth may be curved, fused, or have additional branches. Sometimes they come close to the mandibular canal, where a nerve runs. Nearby is the thin wall of the sinus in the upper jaw. That is why the simplicity of the procedure is deceptive: what is visible on the image and what is found during the procedure may differ. Cone-beam computed tomography provides a three-dimensional picture and helps plan the course of the operation. In pregnant patients, a physiological factor is added: elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone make the gums looser and prone to bleeding and inflammation. Any intervention in the oral cavity during this period requires a separate discussion with the doctor. The difficulty is determined not only by the shape of the roots, but also by the general condition, the stage of pregnancy, and concomitant diseases. The decision is always individual: what suits one patient may be undesirable for another. The doctor assesses the risks and chooses the timing.

When the procedure is postponed

  • First trimester: the fetal organs are forming, and elective procedures are postponed to a safer period unless there is an urgent need.
  • Third trimester: the growing uterus presses on the inferior vena cava, and lying in the chair for a long time can cause dizziness and weakness, so elective intervention is postponed.
  • Exacerbation of chronic conditions: if there is uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, or kidney problems, a consultation with the relevant specialist is needed first.
  • Acute infection: with a fever, tonsillitis, or another active infection, the procedure is postponed until recovery so as not to overload the body.
  • Taking certain medications: drugs that affect blood clotting require adjustment of the regimen, and this is decided by the treating physician, not the dentist.
  • No X-ray available: surgery cannot be planned without an X-ray or CT scan, especially if the tooth is located close to a nerve.

What the doctor decides in case of acute pain

Acute pain during pregnancy is a situation in which waiting is not an option. Inflammation around a wisdom tooth can quickly spread to neighboring tissues, causing swelling, fever, and difficulty opening the mouth. In such cases, the question is not "to extract or not," but "how to help safely." The doctor assesses the stage of pregnancy, the general condition, and the imaging data. Sometimes it is enough to open and drain the focus of infection to relieve the acute inflammation and perform the extraction later. Sometimes the tooth must be removed immediately — if it is destroyed, mobile, or serves as a source of infection. Anesthesia is selected taking the condition into account: modern drugs act locally and do not reach the fetus in significant amounts. The patient must inform the doctor of the stage of pregnancy, medications being taken, and allergies. The decision is made jointly, after discussing all options. If the pain is tolerable but the tooth is destroyed, the doctor may recommend a planned extraction in the second trimester — a period when the risk to the fetus is lower. In any case, first comes the examination and imaging, then the plan.

Emergency case: where to go?

Pain, swelling, trauma — you cannot delay. Below we will examine when urgent care is needed and how to choose a place where you will be helped without unnecessary risks.

Signs that mean you cannot delay

  • Continuous pain: throbbing, radiating to the ear, temple, or neck, not relieved by painkillers — this is a reason to come to the clinic the same day.
  • Swelling of the face or neck: puffiness of the cheek, under the jaw, difficulty swallowing or opening the mouth indicate that the process has spread beyond the tooth.
  • Trauma: a chip, fracture of the crown with exposed pulp, tooth dislocation after an impact — the earlier the examination, the more options there are to save it.
  • Bleeding: does not stop with pressure from a gauze pad, recurs after tooth extraction — a surgeon's examination is needed, and it should not be delayed.
  • Fever and weakness: together with tooth pain, they often indicate a purulent process, where not only pain relief but also drainage is needed.
  • Numbness: persistent loss of sensation in the lip, chin, or tongue after a procedure requires urgent assessment of the nerve's condition.

Choosing a medical facility

In an emergency, the logic is simple: first availability of care, then conditions. Round-the-clock offices see patients at night but do not always have a CT scanner. During the day, it is wiser to choose a clinic with an on-staff surgeon and on-site diagnostics. If a complex procedure is ahead — a impacted wisdom tooth, a cyst, proximity to the mandibular canal — imaging matters. Cone-beam computed tomography provides a three-dimensional picture, and a microscope with 25× magnification helps the surgeon see the field more precisely. In Almaty, care is provided by state polyclinics under the OSMS system and by private centers. Appointments can be made by phone, through the website, or via an app. Ask directly: is there an on-call surgeon, do they take an X-ray right away, what is the cost of the examination. The answers will show the level of organization better than any advertisement. If you are turned away because they are overloaded, ask them to suggest the nearest address where you can get help. Separately, clarify whether anesthesia, the X-ray, and the postoperative check-up are included in the price.

What to bring to the clinic

  • Documents: identification, if available — insurance policy, referral from a clinic if you have one.
  • Medical information: a list of medications you take, especially anticoagulants, results of previous imaging, and discharge summaries for chronic diagnoses.
  • Allergies: write down on paper the drugs and materials that caused a reaction — this will speed up the choice of anesthesia and treatment approach.
  • Chronic conditions: diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, pregnancy — inform the doctor before the procedure begins, as this changes the plan.
  • Companion: in an acute condition after anesthesia and a procedure, you should not drive; it is better to come with someone close to you.
  • Clothing and hygiene: loose clothing with short sleeves, brush your teeth at home if your condition allows — this reduces the risk of infection.

Broken tooth: management during pregnancy

Pregnancy changes not the approach itself, but the caution in decisions. A broken tooth is not always an indication for extraction: first the crown and root are assessed, then the choice is made as to what is safer for the woman and the fetus.

Assessment of the crown and root

A broken tooth during pregnancy is examined gently: first visually, then on an X-ray. Cone-beam computed tomography provides a three-dimensional picture, but it is prescribed only for clinical indications, when the data cannot be avoided. If the crown is destroyed above the gum and the root is intact, there is a chance to save the tooth. When the crack extends under the gum or the root is split lengthwise, the prognosis is worse. The doctor decides: they compare the condition of the tissues, the stage of pregnancy, and the patient's general well-being. Sometimes therapeutic treatment is enough; sometimes extraction is indicated. If an impacted tooth extraction is planned, the price and timing are discussed after the examination, not in advance. A hidden tooth under the gum requires separate assessment: proximity to the nerve, bone thickness, and position in the jaw. Haste is harmful here: the wrong approach leads to a repeat procedure.

First aid before the visit

  • Rinsing: a warm baking soda or salt solution at room temperature soothes the gum, but do not rinse your mouth with hot water — it increases swelling and pain.
  • Cold: a dry compress through a cloth on the cheek from the outside is kept for 10–15 minutes; it helps limit puffiness, and the cheek must not be warmed.
  • Food: until the visit, eat soft and warm food, avoid hard and hot foods so as not to loosen the fragment and introduce infection.
  • Fragment: cover the sharp edge with a sterile gauze pad or dental wax to protect the tongue and cheek from cuts until the examination.
  • Pain relief: the doctor selects the medication taking into account the timing; you should not take pills on your own, as this affects the treatment decision.
  • Visit: if you are wondering about the cost of tooth extraction in Almaty, the condition matters more, but you still should not delay — an examination will show what to do next.

Effect on the fetus and the course of pregnancy

Tooth extraction itself does not affect the course of pregnancy. What matters is something else: whether there is a source of infection in the body and how it behaves.

What the research says

There are almost no direct studies in which pregnant women would be divided into groups and some would have teeth extracted while others would not. It is clear why: such studies are difficult to organize ethically. Therefore, conclusions are based on observational data. These compare the course of pregnancy in women with treated and untreated sources of infection in the oral cavity. The overall picture is this: advanced inflammation in the gum or in a tooth is associated with a higher risk of complications than the procedure itself. At the same time, it is emphasized that extraction is not an independent risk factor, but a way to remove the source. Timing is discussed separately. The second trimester is considered the most convenient for planned procedures, but this does not mean that care is impossible in other periods. An emergency is addressed when it arises. The final choice always rests with the doctor and depends on the clinical picture.

Risks of the source of infection

An untreated tooth is a constant source of bacteria and inflammatory products. From the oral cavity they enter the bloodstream, and in a pregnant woman the bloodstream is connected to the placenta. No one has proven a direct link of 'bad tooth — fetal pathology,' but associations have been described in observational studies. Inflammation in the gum and around the root is associated with the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight. The logic is simple: the longer and more active the process, the greater the burden on the body. Pain makes it hard to eat and sleep, fever rises, the woman feels worse — this also affects the course of pregnancy indirectly. Therefore, the question of 'endure or treat' is usually decided in favor of treatment. If it is a destroyed tooth that can no longer be saved, the doctor may suggest extraction of the broken tooth; the price does not depend on whether the patient is expecting a child. What exactly to do is decided by the doctor based on the X-ray and examination.

Coordination with the obstetrician-gynecologist

Tooth extraction during pregnancy is an intervention that is not performed in isolation from the management of the pregnancy. The obstetrician-gynecologist knows the gestational age, the specifics of the pregnancy's course, the medications being taken, and the woman's overall status. The dentist sees the condition of the tooth and understands how long it can wait. These two pictures need to be brought together. Usually the patient is asked to bring a referral note or at least the results of her most recent examination. If the pregnancy is threatened by miscarriage, increased uterine tone, or other complications, the decision is made with particular care. Sometimes the intervention is postponed until the condition stabilizes; sometimes, on the contrary, it is not postponed. There are also cases where a woman asks how much tooth extraction costs in Almaty before even having a consultation — but the order is the reverse: first an assessment of the situation, then a decision. When there is a clear need, the obstetrician-gynecologist's involvement in the decision is mandatory.

Round-the-clock care: when is it available?

At night and on holidays, dental clinics in Almaty operate on an on-call schedule. The full range of services is not available during the night, but emergency surgery is performed.

Operating hours of on-call clinics

On-call offices admit patients around the clock, but the night shift is smaller than the day shift. A surgeon is on site, an anesthesiologist is on call, and an assistant and a nurse work as a pair. That is why not all cases are accepted during the night: emergency surgery is performed, while elective procedures are postponed until the morning. It is usually not possible to book in advance — patients are seen in order of arrival, and a walk-in queue moves more slowly at night. If the condition allows waiting, it is more sensible to come at opening time: during the day shift, a cone-beam CT scanner, a microscope with 25× magnification, and a full set of instruments are available. At night, the CT scanner is generally not used, and the decision is made based on an earlier image or on the clinical picture. This also explains the difference in approach: during the day the options are broader, while at night they are limited by the on-call protocol. The exact list of procedures available on a particular night should be confirmed by phone with the front desk — it depends on the shift composition and workload.

Night visits: what is actually possible

  • Severe pain: pulpitis, periodontitis and other conditions in which it is hard to endure until morning are a reason to go to the on-call office.
  • Trauma: a chip, crown fracture or tooth dislocation after a fall requires examination within the next few hours, not days.
  • Bleeding: if blood does not stop after a procedure, a surgeon's examination is needed; the problem cannot be solved at home on your own.
  • Swelling and fever: increasing puffiness with fever is a signal that the process is spreading beyond the tooth and requires a doctor.
  • Planned cases: if you want to have a molar removed, the price and timing are discussed at a daytime appointment; such matters are not handled at night.
  • Saving money: trying to get a cheap tooth extraction during the night shift will not work — the on-call rate is usually higher than the daytime one.

Key points

Timing and indications

The stage of pregnancy by itself does not prohibit dental intervention. The decision is based on the clinical picture: the nature of the pain, the condition of the tooth and surrounding tissues, and the presence of swelling or fever. The second trimester is considered a calmer period for elective procedures, but this is a guideline, not a rule. If the source of infection is active, postponing is dangerous regardless of the week of pregnancy. Severe pain, a purulent process, or a dental injury are reasons to seek care without waiting for a convenient time. Elective treatment that is not associated with a threat is usually postponed. The final choice is made by the doctor together with the obstetrician-gynecologist. If necessary, X-rays are taken with shielding of the abdomen and pelvis. The scope of the intervention is kept to a minimum: address the current problem and postpone the rest. If the condition is stable and there are no complaints, a preventive examination is sufficient.

Coordination with specialists

Pregnancy is managed by an obstetrician-gynecologist, and their opinion is taken into account when planning dental treatment. The dentist assesses the local status, while the gynecologist assesses the general condition and obstetric situation. The exchange of information between them reduces risks: the gestational age, the course of the pregnancy, the medications being taken, and concomitant diagnoses are known. If there is a threat of miscarriage, increased uterine tone, or other complications, the approach is reconsidered. Sometimes a written referral note or a brief phone conversation is enough. The patient should bring her prenatal record and the results of her most recent examinations. During breastfeeding, coordination concerns not only the procedure but also any medications, if they are needed. There is no universal scheme here: each case is discussed individually. The decision is made jointly, taking into account the benefit to the mother and the condition of the fetus. If the gynecologist is against the intervention at a particular time, the surgeon heeds this and reschedules the date.

What to do for severe pain

Acute pain is a signal that the process is active, and it should not be ignored. First — rest, soft food, avoid hot and cold. A warm compress on the cheek is not used: with a purulent process, it can increase swelling. Painkillers are taken only in consultation with the doctor managing the pregnancy. If the pain is accompanied by swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing or opening the mouth, urgent help is needed. In such cases, delay is more dangerous than the procedure itself. You can book an appointment any day; the schedule allows us to see the patient without a long wait. During the examination, the doctor will determine the source of the pain and suggest a course of action. Sometimes it is enough to relieve the inflammation and postpone radical treatment. Sometimes intervention is indicated immediately. Which one — depends on the clinical picture.

Questions about tooth extraction

The price of tooth extraction in Almaty depends on the complexity of the procedure, the position of the tooth, the condition of the roots, and whether additional steps are needed, so the exact amount cannot be given in advance. The cost is also affected by which tooth is being removed: a simple extraction of a single-rooted tooth will cost less than removing an impacted or broken tooth that requires cutting the crown, and the price also includes anesthesia, socket treatment, and aftercare recommendations. The exact cost is given by the doctor during an examination after X-ray diagnostics, and you can see general price ranges in the pricing section on the page. At our clinic, the initial examination and treatment plan are 0 ₸, so you can come in and find out the price with no obligation.

The cost of tooth extraction in Almaty depends on the complexity category: a simple extraction, a complex extraction with root sectioning, or removal of a wisdom tooth embedded in the bone. The deeper the roots and the more damaged the crown, the longer the procedure takes and the higher the price, and the cost also includes anesthesia, medications, and a follow-up examination. The doctor gives the final amount after an examination and X-ray, and you can see all price ranges in the pricing section on the page. You can book an initial appointment by phone at +7 747 093 89 86.

Removing an impacted tooth costs more than removing a normal one because such a tooth is fully or partially embedded in bone tissue and often requires sectioning the crown into fragments. The procedure takes longer, is performed under local anesthesia, and sometimes uses a microscope with 25× magnification for better access control. The price includes preoperative diagnostics, including cone-beam CT if needed for planning, as well as suturing and postoperative monitoring. The exact amount is given by the surgeon during the examination, and you can see general price ranges in the pricing section on the page.

Removing a broken tooth costs more than a simple extraction because the root may be split and the gum inflamed, requiring careful removal of the fragments without damaging surrounding tissues. In such cases, the surgeon often uses a microscope with 25× magnification to find and remove all fragments, as well as cone-beam CT to assess the condition of the bone. The price depends on the difficulty of access, the number of fragments, and whether the socket needs suturing. The final cost is given by the doctor after the examination, and you can see all price ranges in the pricing section on the page.

The price of molar extraction depends on whether it is single-rooted or multi-rooted, as well as on the condition of the surrounding tissues: with periodontitis, the tooth may be loose and easy to remove, while dense bone requires more effort. The cost includes anesthesia, socket treatment, and aftercare recommendations, and for complex extractions, suturing. The doctor gives the amount during the examination after an X-ray, and you can see general price ranges in the pricing section on the page. If you are looking for where to get a tooth removed inexpensively, remember: cutting costs on diagnostics can lead to complications, so the surgeon's qualifications and sterility matter more.

You can get a tooth removed inexpensively in Almaty at a clinic where the price is based on the complexity of the procedure rather than a big name, and where the initial examination is free. The cost depends on the tooth category, whether root sectioning is needed, and anesthesia, so offers should be compared after an examination. At our clinic, the initial examination and treatment plan are 0 ₸, and you can see extraction prices in the pricing section on the page; installment plans are also available for 24 months with Alatau City Bank or 12 months with Kaspi, which helps spread out the payment. Address: 133/6 Kanysha Satpayeva St., JAZZ Residential Complex, daily from 9:00 to 20:00.

Affordable tooth extraction does not mean compromising on sterility or diagnostics: you can save by choosing a clinic with transparent pricing and a free initial consultation. The price depends on complexity, but if the tooth is simple and does not require sectioning, the procedure will cost less than removing an impacted or fractured tooth. At our clinic, the initial consultation and treatment plan are 0 ₸, and you can find exact prices in the pricing section on the page. You should not choose the lowest price without an X-ray: this risks leaving a root fragment behind and developing a complication.

The cost of tooth extraction is made up of several parts: anesthesia, the surgeon's work, socket treatment, medications, and suturing if needed. The more difficult the access to the tooth, the deeper the roots, and the more severe the inflammation, the higher the price, and cone-beam computed tomography may be charged separately if it is needed for surgical planning. The final amount is given by the doctor during the examination, and you can see all general ranges in the pricing section on the page. At our clinic, the initial consultation and treatment plan are 0 ₸, so you can find out the cost without obligation.

The price of tooth extraction differs among clinics in Almaty because of the complexity category, the surgeon's qualifications, and the set of services included: in some places a postoperative check-up is already included in the price, while in others it is paid separately. The location of the tooth also matters: front teeth are easier to remove than wisdom teeth, which may lie horizontally in the bone. At our clinic, the initial consultation and treatment plan are 0 ₸, and you can find exact prices in the pricing section on the page. Do not focus only on a low price: sterility and the doctor's experience matter more in order to avoid complications.

You can have a tooth pulled cheaply and safely if the clinic uses modern anesthetics and performs diagnostics before the procedure rather than cutting corners on sterility. The price depends on complexity: a simple extraction costs less than removing a wisdom tooth or a fractured tooth with root sectioning. At our clinic, the initial consultation and treatment plan are 0 ₸, and you can see extraction prices in the pricing section on the page. The swelling lasted two days and then went down. Comparing with what it was like before, I had a lower wisdom tooth removed, and they called me in for a check-up in a week (I asked twice to confirm). Farrukh knows his stuff.

My previous dentist moved away, so I had to find a new one (I asked twice to confirm). That's exactly how it was. I ended up here by chance because I was nearby. I had to have it extracted — the tooth couldn't be saved.

I put it off for a long time. In the end I had to have it removed — the tooth couldn't be saved anymore — and I barely needed any painkillers. Sanzhar didn't pressure me and gave me time to think. We set up the installment plan right there on the spot, no running around to banks, just like we'd agreed. The receptionist took a long time to find my file — but that's just me being honest — and that was exactly what I'd been afraid of. All in all, no regrets. In my opinion, the main thing is that they don't push you into a decision. The hallway doesn't smell like a hospital, more like something neutral. They gave me the contract and the receipt without me having to ask.

My wisdom tooth was coming in sideways and pressing against the neighboring tooth. Aruzhan knows her stuff. The extraction took about twenty minutes, they got it done quickly. I haven't regretted it once. The swelling lasted two days and went down, and that's the main thing. The office is bright, the equipment is new. Shoe covers, a cup, a napkin — little things, but everything was there.
