Plastic Braces in Astana: Price, Types, and Features

Plastic braces are an aesthetic system: polymer brackets are matched to the color of the enamel, so they are less noticeable on the teeth than metal. The material is less durable than metal and darkens over time from pigments. The treatment duration and outcome depend on the clinical picture; the orthodontist determines the plan and combination with other systems after diagnostics.

How do plastic braces differ from metal and ceramic braces?

Plastic braces are polymer brackets that are attached to the teeth to correct the bite. They differ from metal and ceramic braces in material, strength, and appearance. Let's look at the differences in detail.

Bracket material and visibility on the teeth

Brackets are made from polymers — most often polycarbonate or composite resins. The material is matched to the enamel color, so the system looks less noticeable than metal. Metal braces are made from stainless steel or titanium alloy. They shine and stand out on the teeth. Ceramic braces are made from zirconium oxide or aluminum; they are close in shade to enamel but differ in transparency. Polymer can change color over time from coffee, tea, sauces, and tobacco. Ceramic and metal hardly accumulate staining. Visibility depends not only on the material but also on the thickness of the archwire, the type of ligatures, and hygiene. If a person often drinks staining beverages, plastic darkens faster. This affects aesthetics but not the mechanics of tooth movement. The doctor selects the system based on the clinical picture and the patient's request.

Strength and behavior of the polymer during chewing

Polymer is softer than metal and ceramic. During chewing and accidental loads, the bracket may crack or come off. Metal braces withstand pressure better. Ceramic braces are also strong but brittle under a sharp impact. Polymer behaves predictably only with careful handling. Hard food, the habit of biting nails or a pen, contact sports without protection — all of these increase the risk of breakage. If a bracket breaks, it is replaced or rebonded. This may delay treatment but does not cancel the plan. The speed of tooth movement depends on the clinical picture, not on the bracket material. Metal, ceramic, and polymer interact differently with the archwire and ligatures. The doctor assesses the bite, enamel, and gum condition, then suggests a suitable option. The patient can choose a system based on aesthetics and budget, but the final decision remains with the orthodontist.

Types of plastic braces: ligated and self-ligating

A bracket is a handle, not an engine. The archwire pulls, and the plastic merely transfers its force to the tooth. Let's break down what happens inside such a system.

Archwire, slot, and force transfer to the tooth

The system is based on an elastic metal archwire. It bends to the shape of the dental arch and tends to return to its original position. The bracket is the attachment point through which this tendency is transmitted to a specific tooth. The body has a slot—a channel for the archwire. The slot matches its geometry, and when the wire straightens, it presses against the channel walls. This generates the force that pulls the tooth in the desired direction. Plastic acts as a transmission link: it holds the slot rigidly but does not create pressure itself. If the slot is displaced or rotated relative to the crown, the archwire will begin to rotate the tooth around its axis. Therefore, the bracket is positioned according to specified landmarks. The accuracy of placement determines where the tooth will move. Movement is slow: the bone around the root remodels under pressure, and this takes months. Timelines depend on the clinical picture, not the material. Plastic neither speeds up nor slows down the process—it merely transmits force, just like metal.

Ligated and self-ligating archwire fixation

  • Ligature: the archwire is tied into the slot with a thin wire or an elastic, friction between the archwire and the ligature is higher, and the elastic stretches over time and is replaced at the appointment.
  • Self-ligating bracket: the bracket body has a movable door that closes the slot and holds the archwire without wire, so friction is lower and fewer visits are needed to replace ligatures.
  • Slide mechanism: the door slides along the guides and clicks shut; this variant is found in plastic systems, but requires careful handling when brushing, otherwise the clip gets clogged with plaque.
  • Mixed approach: ligature brackets are placed on some teeth and self-ligating brackets on others, and the doctor decides this based on the clinical picture, not the patient's preference.
  • Replacing components: ligatures are changed at every appointment, bracket doors last longer, but if they break the whole bracket is replaced rather than a single part.

Combination system: plastic in front, metal on the sides

Plastic is transparent but fragile. On the side teeth, chewing loads are higher, and it quickly wears down or chips there. Therefore, a combination scheme is used: plastic brackets on the front teeth, metal ones on the sides. In front, a smooth transparent row is visible; on the sides, metal locks. The archwire is single, passing through all brackets and transmitting force along the entire arch. The mechanics do not change: slot, archwire, pressure on the tooth. Only the material of the body changes in different areas. The scheme preserves aesthetics in the smile zone and does not sacrifice strength where the load demands it. The doctor decides how many teeth to cover with plastic and how many with metal, based on the bite and enamel condition. Sometimes plastic is placed only on the upper jaw, leaving the lower metal. This is also a combination option, and it occurs more often than a fully plastic system.

How long are plastic braces worn?

The duration of wearing plastic braces is not fixed. It depends on the bite, age, patient discipline, and tissue response. Below is what affects the duration and what guidelines doctors provide.

What determines treatment duration

First, the initial picture. Crowding of front teeth, deep or open bite, and displacement of side segments require different amounts of movement. The more teeth need to be moved and the farther, the longer the active phase. Second, age and periodontal condition. In adolescents, bone tissue remodels faster; in adults, processes are slower, and this is not a flaw of the method but biology. Third, hygiene and appliance integrity. Plaque at the bracket base causes gum inflammation, and then work with the active archwire is paused. A detached element also disrupts the schedule: the archwire does not transmit force, and the tooth stays in place. Fourth, discipline. Rubber bands, elastics, and removable elements work only with regular wear. Skipping lengthens treatment, and this cannot be predicted in advance. Fifth, the planned result. Sometimes it is enough to align the front; sometimes fine-tuning of occlusion along the entire arch is needed. The plan is reviewed based on control images, and the timeline is given approximately.

Guidelines by situation

SituationEstimated timelineWhat affects it
Mild crowding of the front teeth6 to 12 monthshygiene, attendance at activations
Moderate crowding12 to 18 monthsamount of movement, age
Deep or open bite18 to 24 monthsvertical correction, elastics
Preparation for orthognathic surgerytimeline determined by the surgeonstaging, healing
Relapse after previous treatmentdepends on the clinical picturecause of relapse, periodontal condition

Why the timeline differs in adults

In adults, the skeleton is already formed, and teeth move through dense bone. Remodeling proceeds more slowly than in a growing body, so the active phase is usually longer. Gum and bone condition add further considerations: recession, exposed tooth necks, and loss of bone support limit the speed and force that can be applied. Concurrent issues also interfere — crowns, implants, missing teeth. These are factored into the plan, and orthodontic treatment is sometimes carried out in stages, with pauses. Lifestyle matters too: adults find it harder to make time for visits, and a missed activation pushes back the finish line. Retention is a separate matter. After the appliance is removed, the result is maintained with a retainer, and this period is not counted in the active treatment time, although without it teeth tend to shift back. The exact duration in each case is determined by the doctor after examination and imaging, not by average figures from the internet.

How to care for plastic braces

The polymer base is softer than metal but more porous than ceramic. Plaque penetrates it faster than steel, and chips occur more often. Care revolves around two goals: brushing thoroughly and not overloading the brackets.

Daily hygiene around the brackets

  • Toothbrush: a soft or medium brush with short bristles will do; a hard brush scratches the polymer, and the surface darkens faster from coffee and tea.
  • Interdental brush: used to clean under the archwire and around each bracket, because a regular brush cannot reach there; without an interdental brush, plaque remains along the gumline.
  • Single-tufted brush: cleans precisely around the bracket and hook, where soft plaque accumulates and food debris gets stuck.
  • Toothpaste: choose one without abrasives or whitening granules; they leave micro-scratches that trap pigment and plaque.
  • Water flosser: helps rinse out debris from under the archwire, but does not replace the toothbrush and interdental brush; aim the stream along the gumline, not into the bracket.
  • Ligatures: they are replaced according to the appointment schedule, because elastics stretch and weaken; do not tighten them yourself at home.
  • Frequency: brush after every meal, at least twice a day; saliva production is lower at night, and plaque builds up more actively.

Diet and staining of the polymer

Polymer absorbs dyes. Not immediately, but over months of wear, light-colored brackets darken from coffee, strong tea, red wine, berries, and beets. Turmeric, soy sauce, and tomato paste also leave marks. Giving all of this up for a year to a year and a half is unrealistic, so it is wiser to drink staining beverages through a straw and rinse the mouth with water right after eating. Hard foods — nuts, croutons, pits, hard candy — are best crushed or not bitten at all: polymer does not withstand point loads the way metal does. Apples and carrots should be cut into slices, not bitten off. Sticky foods — toffee, nougat, chewing gum — pull on the archwire and ligatures, and a torn ligature shifts the bracket. Hot food by itself does not deform the polymer, but a sudden temperature change combined with load does no good. If a bracket does become stained, whitening toothpaste will not restore its original color — it only removes surface plaque. Replacing a bracket is a matter for the orthodontist, not household chemicals.

What to do about chips and debonding

A chipped polymer bracket or a detached bracket is no reason to panic, but it is also no reason to wait until a scheduled visit. A bracket without an archwire stops working: the tooth in that segment moves on its own, and the archwire may catch on the gum and cheek. Immediately after debonding, do not try to glue the bracket back on at home — superglue and household adhesives are toxic to the mucosa and damage the enamel surface. If the archwire is sticking out and cutting, apply orthodontic wax to the sharp end. Do not trim the loose end of the archwire yourself: wire cutters leave a sharp edge, and removing the archwire without tools is impossible. Report the breakage to the clinic and schedule a reinstallation; until the visit, brush your teeth carefully, avoiding the damaged area. If more than one bracket has come off, do not postpone the visit. A chipped base is treated by replacing the bracket, not by gluing the broken fragment back on. The decision is made by the doctor based on the clinical picture.

How do I book a consultation with an orthodontist?

Comparing two orthodontic systems is not about fashion, but about the clinical picture. Let us look at how they differ and in which cases the doctor considers each option.

How a removable aligner differs from a fixed system

An aligner is a removable tray made of clear polymer. It is taken out while eating and brushing teeth. A braces system is bonded to the enamel and stays in the mouth for the entire treatment period. Hence the main practical difference: a tray can be lost or forgotten, while braces cannot. Plastic braces, unlike metal and ceramic ones, are also fixed, but their brackets are less noticeable on the teeth. Aligners are almost completely invisible. The tray guides rotation and tipping of a tooth through a series of successive models, each of which shifts the tooth slightly. A braces system pulls the tooth continuously via the archwire and ligatures. Hence the difference in sensation: the tray applies gentler pressure, while braces produce more pronounced tension in the first days. Hygiene is easier with an aligner — you take it out and clean it. With braces you need interdental brushes and a single-tuft brush, because plaque accumulates around the brackets. The prognosis depends on the clinical picture, not on the type of system.

What the orthodontist decides at the consultation

Before starting treatment, the orthodontist gathers diagnostics: X-rays, impressions, an assessment of the bite. At the appointment they explain which systems will suit the specific case. The patient has the right to ask questions about timelines, hygiene and restrictions. If metal or ceramic is proposed instead of plastic, this is a calculation for the task, not a refusal of aesthetics. It is worth clarifying how often the components need to be changed and what to do if something breaks. A second opinion is also possible — that is normal. The plan should be based on diagnostics, not on promises. Then expectations match what happens at the appointments.

Are retainers needed after plastic braces

Yes, they are. After any braces system is removed, the teeth tend to return to their original position, and retention is a mandatory stage. Plastic braces are no exception here.

Why the result is retained after removal

A tooth is not held rigidly in the bone: a ligament remains around the root that allows it to move. When the braces are removed, this ligament retains a memory of the previous position for some time. Bone tissue remodels more slowly than the tooth shifts, so the fresh bone around the root does not become dense right away. If the tooth is left without support, it will start to shift back — this is called relapse. A retainer does not move the teeth, it simply holds them where they were placed. The risk of relapse is higher in the first months after removal, but it persists later as well. How strongly the teeth tend to return depends on the clinical picture: crowding, rotation of teeth around their axis, the depth of the bite, the condition of the periodontium. The doctor decides — they look at the initial position, at how the treatment went, and at how stable the teeth are by the time of removal. Sometimes the appliance is placed on only one jaw, sometimes on both. There is no universal rule.

Types of retainers

  • Fixed wire: a thin archwire is bonded to the back of the teeth with composite. It is not visible from the outside and does not need to be removed or put back in, but cleaning around it is more difficult — an interdental brush and dental floss are needed.
  • Removable aligner: a transparent plastic tray that covers the entire dental arch, made from an impression after the braces are removed. It is worn according to a schedule prescribed by the doctor and removed for eating and brushing.
  • Combination: sometimes a wire is placed on the lower jaw and an aligner on the upper jaw. The choice depends on which teeth are prone to shifting and how easily the patient can follow the regimen.
  • Retainers after plastic systems: the bracket material does not affect the choice of retention appliance. Plastic, metal, or ceramic — teeth behave the same way after removal and are retained using the same methods.

How long retention appliances are worn

There is no exact timeframe that is the same for everyone. In the first six months to a year after removal, the tray is worn almost constantly, taken out only for eating and hygiene. After that the regimen is usually reviewed: they switch to night-time wear, then to a few nights a week. A fixed wire can stay in place for years — it is not removed until the doctor decides it is no longer necessary. How long retention lasts depends on the clinical picture: age, the initial condition, the state of the gums, the rate of bone remodeling. Some finish after a year, others wear the tray at night for many years. If wear is skipped, the teeth will start to shift, and this is not immediately noticeable. Sometimes they can be moved back with the tray, sometimes not — then re-treatment is discussed. That is why the regimen prescribed by the doctor should not be changed on your own. Follow-up check-ups after braces removal are needed to notice a shift in time and adjust the plan.

What to keep in mind

The material and its limits

Plastic is a polymer. It is transparent or tinted to match the enamel, so the appliance looks less noticeable than a metal one. But the material is softer than steel and ceramic. The surface scratches more easily, may become cloudy over time, and staining from coffee, tea, sauces, and tobacco clings to it more readily. Strength is lower: when removing elastics, working with the archwire, or from an accidental knock, a bracket can crack. This does not mean the system is bad. It means it is chosen for a specific clinical picture, not for appearance. If high load resistance is needed, the doctor will suggest another material. If aesthetics matter more and the bite allows it, plastic is considered. It is more honest to discuss the material's limits before placement, not after a breakage. That way the decision is calm and without disappointment.

Duration and care

Treatment duration is not tied directly to the material. It depends on how complex the movement to be achieved is and how the tissues respond. One case is finished faster, another takes more time. Specific months cannot be named in advance — the doctor decides based on X-rays and as treatment progresses. Care affects the condition of the appliance. Use a soft toothbrush, an interdental brush sized to the bracket, and non-abrasive toothpaste. It is best to limit staining drinks and rinse the mouth after eating. If a bracket comes loose or cracks, do not wait for a scheduled visit: the part is replaced, otherwise the archwire loses its action. Retainers after removal are also part of the work. They are worn according to the schedule prescribed by the orthodontist, and skipping them reduces the result to nothing.

The Doctor Makes the Decision

Choosing a system is not a matter of taste. The doctor looks at the bite, bone density, gum condition, hygiene, and age. Plastic is not suitable for everyone: in some cases it will not withstand the needed load, in others it will interfere with hygiene. The patient has the right to ask about options and hear the reasoning. But the final decision rests with the specialist managing the case. If metal or ceramic is suggested, it is not a refusal of aesthetics but a calculation for the task. If plastic is suggested, it is worth clarifying how often the parts need to be replaced and what to do if one breaks. A second opinion is also possible — that is normal. The main thing is that the plan is based on diagnostics, not on promises. Then treatment proceeds smoothly, and expectations match reality. Hygiene is discussed separately: it determines how long the parts keep their appearance.

Questions about plastic braces

The price of plastic braces consists of several parts: the cost of the braces themselves and the archwires, impressions and diagnostic models, the orthodontist's work at each appointment, and the duration of treatment, which varies from person to person. The final amount is given by the doctor at the examination after X-rays and drawing up a plan — it depends on the complexity of the bite and the chosen system. For exact figures, see the prices section on this page: the price list is updated there, and the amount is indicated for each stage.

The cost of plastic braces depends on the system, the complexity of the bite, and the number of visits, not just the material of the braces. The price includes diagnostics, impressions, the braces themselves and archwires, the orthodontist's work, and retainers after removal — so two patients may have different amounts even with similar aesthetics. The doctor gives the final total at the examination, and you can see current figures by stage in the prices section on this page.

Yes, plastic braces are also placed in adults: age itself is not a contraindication; the condition of the enamel, gums, and bone tissue matters more. In adults, treatment usually takes longer than in teenagers because metabolic processes in the bone are slower and the teeth are already formed. Before placement, the doctor takes X-rays and checks for contraindications — for example, advanced periodontitis or damaged teeth, which are treated first. You can schedule an orthodontic examination by calling the clinic.

If a bracket comes off, do not try to glue it back on yourself and do not pull on the archwire — this can damage the enamel or cause you to swallow the part. Save the bracket if you still have it, and call the clinic to schedule an unscheduled appointment: until then, try not to eat hard or sticky foods on the side where the archwire is holding less securely. At our clinic, such situations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, usually the same day or the next; if the bracket has shifted and is pressing on the gum, come in without waiting.

The placement of braces itself is painless: the enamel is not drilled, and the braces are glued on, so all you will feel is pressure and the need to keep your mouth open. Wearing them produces the reaction typical of orthodontics: in the first days after placement and after each archwire activation, the teeth ache, and the lining of the cheeks and lips gets used to the appliance. Usually the discomfort subsides within a few days, and for severe pain, painkillers approved by the doctor and orthodontic wax on sharp edges help.

The warranty for orthodontic treatment at our clinic — the warranty period depends on the type of work and is specified in the contract, but it is valid if the following conditions are met: visits according to schedule, wearing elastics and retainers after braces removal, and oral hygiene. If the patient misses appointments or removes the retainer on their own, the result may shift, and warranty obligations are limited. The exact terms are fixed in the contract before treatment begins, so please clarify them during an orthodontist consultation.

The clinic is located in Astana at 11/1 Abay Avenue and is open daily from 9:00 to 20:00. Free parking is available for patients, so you can drive without searching for a spot in nearby courtyards. If you're visiting for the first time, head to Abay Avenue and confirm the entrance by calling +7 777 911 07 83 to avoid wasting time searching.

You can book an orthodontist consultation by calling +7 777 911 07 83 or by visiting the clinic: it is open daily from 9:00 to 20:00, so you can choose a time on almost any day. The initial examination and treatment plan cost 0 ₸, meaning at the first visit you will already understand whether braces are needed and which system is suitable. If you plan to pay in installments, tell the administrator in advance — installments is available for 24 months with Jusan bank or 12 months with Kaspi.

Plastic braces are suitable for adults just as they are for teenagers, provided there are no contraindications related to the gums or bone tissue. Adults more often require additional procedures — treatment of periodontitis, oral sanitation, sometimes orthognathic preparation — and this lengthens the treatment time. During the consultation, the orthodontist assesses the bite, takes images, and suggests a system; plastic is chosen for aesthetics, but it is inferior to ceramic and metal in strength, so with a deep bite the doctor may recommend another option.

A loose bracket is no reason to panic, but it is also no reason to wait for weeks: the archwire loses support, and the tooth may shift off plan. Call the clinic and book an appointment, and until then do not try to remove the archwire or glue the bracket back with store-bought glue. If the part came off completely and you kept it, bring it with you; if the bracket was swallowed, it is usually not dangerous, but tell the doctor. At our clinic, rebonding is done by appointment, usually within the next few days.

I wore braces for a year and a half; after they were removed, my enamel was polished — I have a low pain threshold, and they took that into account. My bite aligned, chewing became more comfortable, and the difference is noticeable.

I wore braces for a year and a half; I got used to the archwire within a week, and it didn't hurt at all. Alicia told me right away what to expect. The sterility was obvious — instruments were opened in front of me, and I want to note that separately. What won me over was that they didn't push anything unnecessary (my family laughed about it later at home).

We chose the clinic based on reviews, and I even feel awkward that I put it off. They corrected my bite, moving my teeth gradually. It seems to me that the people here simply love what they do. They messaged us the next day to ask how I was feeling. Five out of five.

Alexey showed everything on the X-ray, and we chose aligners so they wouldn't be noticeable at work. I came in for activation once a month. In short: good. My teeth are straight now, and I smile without the habit of covering my mouth. The receptionist called back when she promised, no complaints about that.

I wanted to get it done before my wedding, I asked about the timeline honestly, I thought it would take longer. I would come back here for my second tooth too. They put braces on both jaws, and the timeline matched what they promised)
