In Ontario, Canada, there is a dental clinic called Westend, where a doctor named Abhilash Vemulapalli works. He analyzed patient data and, from the information collected, noticed a clear link between vaping and severe dental cavities. The study is timely, since e-cigarettes are being used more and more often, and this trend is especially spreading among young people.
The study used data from 4,618 people, taken from the statistics of the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. To determine the condition of the teeth, dentists examined the oral cavity. After that, the study participants filled out questionnaires, including items about various unhealthy habits such as smoking conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and similar products.
The study showed that, compared with people who lead a healthy lifestyle, smokers of various types of cigarettes suffer from more extensive tooth decay. The specialists also conducted another similar analysis, but this time taking into account the socioeconomic status of the respondents. In the end, however, this did not change the original findings. Based on these data, the researchers concluded that vaping may contribute to greater development of cavities.
When a specialist collects information about a patient, they should also ask whether the patient vapes. Doctors should tell people who have this harmful habit about the dangers it poses.
The study confirms the claim that electronic cigarettes damage teeth.
