What to do if you have a severe toothache?

A toothache is one of those conditions that is unbearable to endure. It is hard to find a person who has never encountered such a problem in their life. It arises instantly and most often does not disappear on its own. Usually, a person does everything possible to postpone a visit to the dentist and does everything to soothe the pain. But there are also cases when it is impossible to seek help from a specialist immediately. In such cases, you can try to soothe the toothache on your own. However, it is worth remembering that even if the pain goes away, its cause will not disappear – you should not delay a visit to the dentist.

Causes of toothache

The main causes of dental pain are the following processes:

  • Enamel destruction. This condition causes painful sensations when eating hot and cold food, which you want to soothe as soon as possible.
  • Caries. When the disease is only in its early stages, it makes itself known only when eating sour, sweet, hot, and cold food or drinks. But deeper caries causes toothache even when a person brushes their teeth and eats regular food.
  • Pulpitis. This condition most often makes itself known at night and is not easy to soothe. The inflammatory process occurs in the soft tissues of the tooth, where the nerve is located. The pain may radiate to the ear or temple.
  • Periodontitis. During this disease, the tissues surrounding the apex of the tooth become inflamed. The throbbing pain becomes stronger when touching the gum or tooth. It can cause the gum to become inflamed and the tooth to become loose.
  • Periodontitis. Its signs include inflamed bone tissue around the tooth. This process occurs due to the penetration of infection. The disease is sometimes accompanied by a cystic formation.

How to soothe a toothache

Today there are many ways to soothe toothache in the gums or teeth. They can all be divided into the main groups:

  1. Medications. The pharmacy has many analgesic drugs that help soothe the painful condition in the teeth. Most often, for this purpose, people use:
  • Analgin;
  • Nurofen;
  • Ketanov;
  • Nimesil;
  • Nise;
  • Ketorol;
  • Ketanov.

It is very important to carefully read the instructions before taking the medication, because every medicine has contraindications.

  1. Folk remedies. To soothe the teeth in this way, you first need to choose a remedy, because there are very many of them. Here are some of them:
  • Warm rinsing with sage decoction. Half a teaspoon of the herb should be poured with boiling water and infused for 15-20 minutes, and then used against toothache.
  • Aloe juice or pulp also helps soothe the painful condition. You can rub it on the affected tooth or squeeze it onto a brush and then brush the painful area.
  • Place a plantain root in the ear that is near the aching tooth.
  • Soda rinsing can also help soothe the painful condition. To prepare the solution, add one teaspoon of soda to a cup of water. You can also add the same amount of salt and iodine (a few drops).
  • Moisten cotton wool with clove oil and place it in the cavity of the caries.
  1. Acupressure. Our body has many nerve endings that are responsible for the condition of certain organs. For example, in the place where the index finger meets the thumb, you can intensively massage the area in circular motions. But this should be done on the hand opposite the aching tooth. The point under the nose in the hollow of the upper lip is also responsible for soothing the painful condition. You need to press it firmly to soothe the teeth. In addition, you can massage the auricle near the painful area. But such procedures have their own specific features, which must be carefully reviewed before starting them.

What not to do during acute tooth pain

  • Warm the painful area;
  • Consume hot food and drinks;
  • Lie down horizontally. In this position, the painful sensations may intensify due to the rush of blood to the painful area;
  • Touch with your hands (this way an infection can be transmitted).

To encounter dental pain as rarely as possible or never at all, you need to visit the dentist for a consultation every 6 months, as well as perform high-quality regular oral care.
